Maybe if actors and such weren’t paid millions a minute some of us poorer folks would be able to afford movies etc and wouldn’t have to depend on others to share with us, yes your honor, it’s called sharing.

@40: Probably several reasons. For one, Google isn’t used primarily for infringing copyright, while most torrent sites are. Look what happened when Mininova went “legit”, their traffic plummeted. Also, Google doesn’t sort, organize, filter, or moderate its results. Which makes it a crappy place to look for torrents, since things like fakes etc. are included. But it also protects them, a judge can ask a torrent site “If you have moderators to remove spam and fakes, why not moderators to remove infringing content?” Google’s response would be “We don’t touch results, it’s all neutral”. Third, a lot of torrent sites have categories which suggest illegal uses, and their staff sometimes make stupid remarks that the court views as encouraging copyright infringment.

“A MPAA spokesperson got back to us and said that the court has rejected Fung’s proposal. Looks like he’ll either be picking out all the illegal content or shutting down after all.”

Want a way to fight this? Put up a bunch of torrents which contain the words that would be filtered (in a non-copyright infringing manner), so that any attempt to filter would result in legitimate (and entirely creative commons’ed or what have you) results being blocked. And then claim some sort of censorship.

The lite version of the site is nothing more than a big search box similar to other search engines such as Google. Unlike the present site where users can browse through various torrent categories, the lite version should not induce copyright infringement any more than other search engines, Fung reasons.

At this point, it’s clear that Fung very much wants to continue induce infringement because this is what draws millions of people to isohunt every day – the opportunity to circumvent payment. If Fung removes the torrents for copyrighted material, then his userbase will disappear almost overnight and the piracy scene will cease to care about his sites. They will think he’s “sold out to hollywood.” The world of torrent sites is a competition over who can provide the most copyrighted material. It’s almost painful to watch Fung make excuses when it’s painfully obvious that he is just trying to get the courts to authorize him to continue assisting in copyright infringement, which will never happen.

At every stage, Gary Fung has promised to resist court rulings in whatever way possible and reassure his fans that it’s “not permanent” and he’s subsequently lost at every step of the way.

Whether or not the court will accept this lite version, it is unlikely that isoHunt will start to actively filter content from the site in the future. The ultimate measure would be to block access to visitors from the United States, which would also be sufficient to comply with the court’s demands.

Unless Gary Fung wants to earn a spot on America’s most wanted or even Dog the Bounty Hunter, he will eventually have to comply with the court’s ruling. If he doesn’t do that, then he will get fined. He will undoubtedly refused to pay the fine, at which time he will get sent to jail. Probably, he will also start howling about how his human rights are being violated at this point. It’s all a chain of defiance. Refusing to abide by copyright law, then refusing to do anything when you are caught.

The country that didn’t respect copyrights from other countries when it was still a new country now wants every other country to implement laws to protect US income. IMHO, and that’s just my personal subjective experience, isoHunt is useful for locating popular content, but not so much for rare stuff. I’ve had A LOT more luck finding rare files on ED2k with its built-in search, given some patience.

But useful or not…, it still sucks to see the US always trying to force its maximalist view of copyright on companies who operate in foreign countries.

Once again a fruitless exercise to stop the ‘terror’ of isoHunt and the others in this Axis of evil. Worst thing that happens if you do get blocked find a vpn service that has a footprint in a country that allows access and do whatever it is you want. The ‘net should be about freedom at any cost and as individuals you need to take back your rights. Unlike my brothers in the US who bend over cower and accept whatever dung they are handed, I and other like me continue to do our part to expose as many as possible to a tool to secure their freedom.
