I remember when I first learned Windows 95. I actually knew what most of the registry entries were for. It was like exploring and making a map in your head. Man, the learning curve on Windows and DOS was a lot harder back when you didn't have soooooo much troubleshooting information and fix-it tips all over the place. Nowadays we have Debian which has maybe a handful of configuration files that'd you'd ever want to mess with and they mostly have GUIs to configure them just like in Mac/Windows worlds. That or you can just Google what to change and copy your old file before doing it.

Ugh, a live CD or WUBI sounds more useful to that user. Run virus/malware scans on the other OS. I've gotten in the habit of having at least 2 OSes on my PCs since being able to go from say a broke Windows 7 to XP or KDE is very handy. Even more so if you upgrade to a 2nd HDD and put the newer OS on the faster and bigger one. If one dies, you can at least still get even a newbie user to their browser instantly without dealing with ultrasmall screens or slow performance of tablets/phones. Only annoying bit is having to install drivers 2x. :(

Was gonna say, yeah. Even Debian has gotten pretty easy since Wheezy (7). Actually, I quit using Ubuntu-based distros since I like the stability of ultra-conservative paranoid uncle Debian who's always a few years behind (on untested features). ;)
