uTorrent Adds Media Player, Plus Goes Live…

The free version of uTorrent just came out with a new stable release that adds a media player and support for external devices such as smart phones and game consoles. On the same day, BitTorrent Inc. also made their paid client uTorrent Plus available to the public. For $24.95 uTorrent Plus gives users extra features such as file-conversion and a built-in virus scanner.

utorrentWith well over 100 million active users a month, uTorrent is without doubt the most-used BitTorrent client.

In recent years uTorrent has transformed from a relatively ‘geeky’ and minimal application into a BitTorrent client that should appeal to a mainstream audience.

Another step in this direction has just been taken with the newly released stable build of uTorrent 3.1, now with a built-in media player. This player allows users to watch videos or listen to downloaded music without having to leave uTorrent.

Another new feature, one that was already present in early beta releases, is integration with external devices including the iPhone, iPad, PS3, Xbox 360 and Android hardware. This allows users to quickly sync downloaded content to these devices.

And that’s not all the uTorrent developers have been working on lately.

Aside from the new version of uTorrent ‘free,’ BitTorrent Inc. also released uTorrent Plus, a paid version of the client with additional features. As announced a few weeks ago, this new version of uTorrent costs $24.95 a year.

Plus enables users to convert videos to formats that are compatible with external devices. It also comes with built-in anti-virus, remote file-transfers and a built-in media player.

Converting a file with Plus

“Our goal was to enhance uTorrent to be a powerful tool that lets you free your personal content from the PC. Plus adds key features needed to accomplish this, and then adds security to keep you safer,” says uTorrent’s director of product management Jordy Berson.

Users who now visit the uTorrent website will see that they can choose between the free and the plus version of the BitTorrent client. Existing free users will also see an “upgrade to plus” banner in their clients, but this can be disabled. Aside from putting work in the Plus version, the uTorrent team will continue developing the free client in the coming years.

Given the MAFIAA and their intolerable hold over the US government, I see the introduction of cash to uTorrent (uT) as an open invitation to the Department of Justice’s ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency) to seize uTorrent.com’s domain and force them to cease trading ASAP.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong folks, but surely anyone can see this happening in reality?

I also hope Bittorrent Inc is already rich enough to defend itself in the lengthy court battles that will undoubtedly ensue from this terrible decision to charge for uT, because I doubt they’ll get sufficient funds from sales in time to mount a decent, well-funded defence :(

Sorry guys, but I see this as a HUGE FAIL.

      “…without having to leave uTorrent ” .
Yes, because it’s just so CONFUSING when you click a file and
it’s opened in the associated program, right ?
Will you also make a built-in Antivurs so i don’t have to leave uTorrent ?
And how about DVD-burning software ??

In fact, how about making uTorrent in to a OS, that way we will NEVER have to leave it .. Besides, HDD-space is CHEAP these days so there’s no reason why
any program shouldn’t be able to do everything .Without ‘leaving’ it !

Now please repeat after me : BLOAT-WARE !

      • Yibet

This is for all the tech non people, now they can use the app too, I know many of them that if you tell them anything about pc’s, they are like “are u on facebook?” I say no its spyware and tracks you everywhere, they say “well its all I know how to do besides turn on the pc”. This is for them….

Extremely timely insight on the implications of putting a “for profit” label on the Utorrent program. I think that from the point of view of private citizens who dissent from the current copyright regime three considerations are paramount: First, will this company have a big enough treasury in time to wage war against the established copyright interests; Second, will that debate be disruptive enough to force reconsideration of the current copyright privileges; Third, does this company develope its own monopolistic attributes within the p2p environment. Risky. Very risky. Thank you for calling time on this risk.

    • guest

Adding profit to piracy is just a bad idea. Dunno what the utorrent guys are thinking other than ‘please sue us’.

  • Djlatino

wait wut? doesn’t Azureus/Vuze have this already :P

Yes, and Bittorrent Inc seem to have forgotten why so many of us ditched Azureus for uTorrent in the first place…

  • http://twitter.com/icanhazsake Ninja

Fail. The said media player should be at most an add-on. A bittorrent client should do what one expect of it: manage and download torrents.

That’s it, I’m moving to deluge.

    Bloatware O-hoy!

uTorrent got popular because it was lightweight, fast and simple. It won’t stay popular when it’s bloated, slow and complicated.

    • pZ

bloat is not same as heavy and complicated if the features are added keeping resources in mind, but it usually is, like Ahead’s Nero…

      • http://twitter.com/icanhazsake Ninja

Nero is precisely what I thought. What an amazing burner it was. Nowadays I keep my distance from it.

I don’t mind if they allow plugins or add-ons or even some sort of program integration with external players/burners/etc. As long as I can keep it small and light. Why would I use utorrent built in player when I have CCCP with mpch and it’s just plain awesome? The answer is I won’t. But I’ll still have to download the extra weight and it’ll still load in my memory. I don’t want it.

Ridiculous… uTorrent goes from normal torrent client to some over sized, and over priced program trying its hardest to be assaulted by the Anti Piracy groups. The “Extra” paid features are all things that can be done by much more secure and stable programs. It add’s nothing that I personally can use.

This must be uTorrents idea of how to run off any users thinking of paying for the program. Unfortunately there will be many who buy it assuming that by paying for this program allows them to download anything without repercussions.

    They also mention more security…

Only extra security I have seen is for the remote connection they have setup in the program. I get the EXACT same “protection” and even more use out of TeamViewer then I do with uTorrent remote service.

External device and file conversion service is a sham on its own as it has only made me lose quality in videos that I have converted compared to the other programs I use to convert videos to my portable devices.

All in all… I feel like I have just spent 25euro’s for nothing more then to say “Hey look I am the proud owner of uTorrent Plus.
Oh might I add that they refused any refund. Lovely stuff.

  • Anon1

    $25 a year?!?!

“Plus enables users to convert videos to formats that are compatible with external devices. It also comes with built-in anti-virus, remote file-transfers and a built-in media player. ”

What? This is totally pointless. All I require it to do is download the torrent, not stream, not scan it. I have other stuff to do that.

No one in their right mind would pay for this.

You are absolutely right, except on the last issue :
Just have a look at the Azureus/Vuze forums and you will see that there are plenty suckers to exploit out there .. I have no other word than ‘exploit’ to describe what I think it is when you demand payment for functions that are available for free ..

    • Jmorse43508

Which would be any version of uTorrent before 3.0. I was reading in the filesharing forum at Broadband Reports on how bloated uTorrent had become with the 3.0 version, much like Vuze has gotten to be.

Might as well check out oldversion (dot) com. (I would put it in as a link, but I don’t feel like solving a captcha right now.)

      • http://twitter.com/AnubisAscended Alex

Thank God that I still have an older version (1.8.1) lying around – the the newer versions caused severe memory leaks on WinVista that would easily eat 300MB or more and slow the system down to a crawl

/plus, I don’t need all that junk in my torrent client, all I want to do is download (and upload)

qBittorrent is basicly a free software clone of µTorrent. It tries to mimic µTorrent, but without the commercialization, with open source code instead of closed source code and without the bloat. :-)

        clicky clicky awesome! :D thanks

  • djnforce9

I have a bad feeling uTorrent it starting to go the way of Azerus (now called Vuze) in becoming sheer bloatware with tons of features that are completely useless to those whom simply want to download torrents and that’s it. I don’t even own a smartphone so all of this new stuff is completely pointless. I’ll be sticking with the latest version before they added this nonsense.

Why must ALL clean and streamlined applications become bloatware eventually? I remember this happening to Adaptec (now Roxio) CD Creator and then eventually Nero Burning Rom.

Thank God, finally! I was so getting sick of having to stop µtorrent in order to watch my movies, since it’s still 1989 and we’re talking about single tasking DOS where you can only run one program at a time. Now µtorrent is first to circumvent this annoying limitation. All my dreams finally came true!

One day, Micro$oft or Crapple will come up with a solution to run several programs at once on the same computer. I have no doubt that we will see lots of this when “Advanced Technology” processors like Intel’s new 80286 become available for the masses. I have heard they will be running at something like 20 MHz and support several MBs of RAM!

Thanks again for bringing us into new decade! It’s the 90s! Yeah!

    • Anonymous

I know your post is sarcasm, but I’m fairly sure the new media player is another program anyway. You have all the convenience a button can provide, with four times the bloat!

  • Fuckyou

    Bloatware!

  • Aaa

Lets just check history on this…
Azureus was the King, it became bloat-ware, so uTorrent gained popularity…
uTorrent is now the King, it’s becoming bloat-ware, so…

The question should be which will be the next popular torrent client?

    Guess some people never learn…

  • Glib

I’ve almost always been against the “ZOMG uTorrent is bloatware because it has more features than it had 4 years ago” team, but this switch from being a torrent client to being MORE than a torrent client is not cool. Web interface is great for managing from random devices, IPv6, plugins for when I want other features, and even the new “idiot-proof” interface is quite nice. However, I will not be getting the integrated player version; the mentions of Nero and Vuze are absolutely perfect examples of how good intentions go so bad.

I’m still using utorrent 1.8.2, will never update it after using Azureus back in the day and watching it turn into more of a bloated piece of crap with every update. Utorrent seems to be doing the same now.

Central question of the upcoming litigation against uTorrent:

Does the proliferation of massively “for profit” versions disqualify the DRM safe harbor rights of current open source not for profit clients?

Betcha our nerves will be tested.

  • Darkwiz666

I actually find it funny that people are complaining about a program adding more OPTIONAL features because apparently it’s going to slow down their computers or something…

…stop using your grandfathers old ass Apple Lisa 2 and get a modern computer…you know, one that can handle a program like this just fine?

(and I also find it funny how some of the people complaining here have God machines and game play games at full throttle with max FPS no problems, but shit bricks about a media player/anti-virus in a tiny torrent client…HAW)

    • Godarklight

I think its a combination of liking something tiny that just works and liking a program specific for the task. You use a torrent client to download torrents (rtorrent with rtgui or ktorrent), you use a media player to play movies (vlc), you use a converter program to convert movies (ffmpeg)

      • Anonymous

Yup, and this goes against what uTorrent was created to be. Hopefully Transmission does a Windows release soon. Only stupid people will pay for uT+

    • Bobobohannon

“…stop using your grandfathers old ass Apple Lisa 2 and get a modern computer…you know, one that can handle a program like this just fine?”

Yes, because we should have to use a modern powerhouse of a computer for a torrent program. Do you also drive a 1000 Horsepower car to work and back?

What a failure this Plus version is going to be. No one is going to buy it. I was one of the testers for it and it still is very unstable. It just isn’t worth the $24.95 per year their charging. I can do all the extra stuff it can do with free programs.

This reminds me when AOL started charging $8 for Winamp and edged Justin Frankel out. More bloat and less effective design. I was shocked when I brought a new computer home a couple of months ago and installed the latest Utorrent, version 3.0. It has this weird front end with things like featured content and torrent search that don’t work as well as the torrent sites do. I really don’t like how the share ratio is missing for each torrent. I have version 1.72 on my old computer and version 3 adds more complexity rather than more functionality.

Utorrent please, please bring back the share ratio in the torrent listing.
