Den viktigste forskjellen mellom TPB og for eksempel Google, er kanskje at TPB søker på torrent-filer, mens Google søker på alle slags filer. Man kan likevel kjapt lage et Google-søk som også utelukkende søker på torrent-filer, og den mest brukte torrent-klienten (programmet) uTorrent har nylig lagt til nettopp et slikt søk på sine nettsider.
