How shit/old are you PC's when you think Azureus/Vuze is a resource hog?

Seriously, about £200 will get you an Intel Core 2 Quad - Q6600 and about 2 gig of nice RAM.

One of my pc's has that spec and I run Azureus/Vuze in the background whilst playing some mp3's, encoding a DVD and playing Crysis.

If 100MB of RAM makes you worried, you seriously need to consider upgrading.

Mick - you'll have to make better wide-eyed leaps to make that stick.

What you're saying is, that in attempting to pursue licensing deals, so that they can provide legal content via their site, and thus give credence to the 'substantial non-infringeing uses' argument, that by doing so they're automatically providing userdata to the content companies?

I think you might want to stay off the conspiracy theory sites a bit, maybe stick to those that know what they're talking about.

Besids, how do you know something like Azureus isn't doing the same? Because it's open source? I would have thought the news last week, that an open source mozilla download had been infected with a trojan months ago, and only just discovered proves that open is as insecure, if not more so (since everyone assumes someone else checked open source, whereas closed people don't make that assumption) than closed source. Vuze is trying to make the exact same deals as bittorrent inc. you know.

utorrent is closed source. sure they aren't keeping data on you? And now that utorrent is owned by BitTorrent, Inc, do you know that they are trying daily to get into bed with the same content companies that love the RIAA/MPAA so much.

How easy it is to get people to sell out - make a "better" product that calls home and gives them everything they need to know to put you down.

Seeing as I have a massive RAM (over 3.5GB), I never have a problem with Azureus. Originally when I downloaded Vuze to replace my old Azureus I was severely disappointed - it was a whole load of crap that I didn't want with none of the details that I did want. But then I figured out that the Advanced tab gives you pretty much the same as the old Azureus.

I've never had reason to doubt it, and until I do, I won't switch to utorrent.

If Azureus and uTorrent were standing face to face (this is a hypothetical situation, mind you) there is no way uTorrent would embarrass itself by claiming to be the best torrent client. uTorrent would likely kiss up to Azureus and would one day hope to reach the level of greatness Azureus has achieved so effortlessly. Their time together would grow short, and uTorrent would thank Azureus for using slightly more resources. "Thats the only thing that stops me from being wiped out like Hiroshima" exclaims uTorrent. Azurues, cool as ever, pats uTorrent on the back and says, "C'mon now. Even if I used less system, I doubt your usage would decline. The peeps that use you just do not know any better."
"Yeah. Youre right" says uTorrent and on a side thought adds while rubbing it's privates, "So, wanna go back to my room??" Azureus, extremely manly and hairy, punches uTorrent in the nose. "Thats not what they mean by open source, you douche." Azureus says while turning to get in it's gas hog V-8 corvette . uTorrent gives the bittorrent client a call instead. They have a great night together. Some time later, bittorrent's butt starts to hurt and out pops uTorrent 1.7.

I havent seen a noticeable drop in performance using AzureusBitTyrant 2.5. (Or any AZ version 2.5 and up) Im running an 64 AMD ATHOLON XP 1800+ with 2GB ram and I can easily run a torrent(s), surf the web, watch a video (two monitors) and calculate pie to infinity. All while happily torrenting with good 'ol Azureus. If I didnt know better Id say this whole 'Azureus consuming too much, blah java blah, big scary options menu' thing is a smear campaign by uTorrent.

I'd like to try uTorrent, but I can't GET IT TO STOP LOCKING UP! After reading through the uTorrent forums, including their own, the common answer is that it's conflicting with the firewall. Not just one particular firewall, but several different ones. Their answer (by uTorrent's moderator) is that the problem is a "bug" in all these different firewalls, and not with them. Their solution is to uninstall these firewalls. (These days, that's like having sex with a hooker without a condom).

If it was just one firewall that was conflicting, it might just be one of those things, but several? Maybe uTorrent should look over their code again...

I have been using Azureus for many years and plan to keep using it. It is an excellent client and will probably lead the future now that Bittorrent/utorrent/mpaa moves away from the open protocol.

As for Vuze, who cares? I have never seen it and no one is forcing you to use it. The classic ui is fine thank you. Azureus might be complex for some people, in that case something like Transmission is enough.

Yeah, java uses around 200m of ram (shares with other java apps) and 4% cpu on a Duron 1.3ghz. Firefox is usually the bloat here. You must use java 1.6, not 1.5 for Azureus 3.0.4. And no, just because you see the ui react slow, does not mean the program is. Check your traffic and bandwidth with other tools. If your isp is slowing you, see the countermeasures in the azureus wiki.

Can I just say, that this stats are way off. Firstly BitLord does not have 1% of installed desktops. No way, look at its alexa (inaccurate but a good place to start). a reach like that does not equal anything near the others. To say that its 5x smaller than utorrent is absured. its 1000s of times smaller.

Furthermore limewire is NOT declining. For a while it had performance issues, but its total search volume has been growing rapidly, yes. even now in late 2007. So I wish people would get their facts straight...

all *nix seeders will pick rtorrent if they like their resources. Has somebody tried to seed hundreds of torrents on router with 32MB RAM ? I dont think "lightweight" utorrent will do
wait - so if the mafIAA were to bring to bear the full brunt of their financial / legal powers, who would be hardest to take down: an open source community, or a mid-size business?
Well, let's see. A business which has a lot of investment in it would have a decent chance of defending itself rather than caving in.

And in the case that something would happen - the client is open source and could be carried on by others.

You could take the example of Vuze actively complaining about the actions of Comcast as something which benefits from a company being involved.

I haven't had problems running azeurus headlessly using the web interface on a 300MHz celeron with 256MB RAM.

Although java takes a while to load up (since it has to load the jvm) it's hardly the resource hog people claim it to be.

There's gotta be business cases for this somewhere.

And everybody, just because uTorrent is owned by a company that made major contributions to the existence of Torrents, doesn't mean they are going to turn their back on that community and screw them over; they're just kind of a legal interface between users and content owners.

I would be interested in actually getting numbers like this.. I could talk to Slad, see if he could get something like that done on his trackers (they are used by EZTV) :)
Next it will be IPs. Thanks, but no thanks.
Eh, no. The only difference between this tracking and a regular hit counter is that client tracking increments based on what type of hit is made. Incrementing a counter is WAY different than logging IPs - the latter takes a serious toll on busy trackers, and is also not something that a serious BT tracker would ever engage in. Honestly, by now I'd think you people know us better than that.
