The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

uTorrent Helps Artists Monetize Free Content

BitTorrent Inc., the parent company of the popular BitTorrent client uTorrent, starts a new series of experiments today in which it will help artists monetize the BitTorrent ecosystem. The company has partnered with the legendary DJ Shadow who agreed to give away exclusive content to BitTorrent users. The free content bundle includes software from advertisers, allowing the artist and BitTorrent to generate revenue from users who opt to install it.

dj shadowA decade ago most artists cringed at the thought of giving their work away for free. But not anymore.

The Internet offers artists the opportunity to reach an audience of millions at virtually no cost. It’s a gateway to expand and build fan-bases, and sharing music, movies and books is now seen as an opportunity rather than a threat.

Whether it’s YouTube or BitTorrent, sharing free content has become an accepted means of advertising. In the case of YouTube there’s the added bonus that artists can generate some revenue from advertising. On BitTorrent, on the other hand, it’s pretty much impossible to include ads, but uTorrent’s parent company BitTorrent Inc. hopes to change that.

Today the company has announced a new series of experiments that will allow artists to generate revenue from the work they share for free.

The idea is simple. BitTorrent Inc. helps artists to promote a bundle of free content to their 150 million users. This bundle includes a piece of sponsored software such as a media player or anti-virus package that can be installed as an option. When a user installs the free software, both the artist and BitTorrent get a cut of the proceeds.

“We believe we can make digital distribution even more viable for creators and fans. So, beginning now, we’ll be testing new ways to drive profitability for creators while delivering even more meaningful media experiences for our users,” BitTorrent CEO Eric Klinker comments on the announcement.

The first experiment goes live today with the legendary DJ Shadow releasing a “BitTorrent bundle”. DJ Shadow’s bundle contains exclusive content and tracks from his Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era (1992-1996) as well as some other goodies and sponsored software.

With this model, BitTorrent Inc. hopes to add a lucrative revenue stream for artists while giving users more access to free content.

“Our core business is creating the best torrent products in the world. While we will always have advertising and offer-free products in market such as BitTorrent Plus, we’ve seen how relevant and meaningful good content offers are to our users, and how supportive the BitTorrent community is of the content creators we work with,” Klinker says.

BitTorrent Inc. will use several ways to bring the featured content to the attention of both new and existing users. New users will get the option to download it when they install uTorrent, and existing users will see banner and text ads promoting DJ Shadow’s bundle.

How the bundle is promoted differs per user.

BitTorrent Inc. says it remains dedicated to developing their flagship software uTorrent. These content deals are a way for them to show artists how the technology can be used to benefit them.

“New business models built on top of the BitTorrent ecosystem are the future of content. This is where fans are. It’s time to bring artists, filmmakers and game developers into that conversation in meaningful ways too,” BitTorrent CEO Klinker says.

BitTorrent Inc. emphasized to TorrentFreak that this new approach to the monetization of free content is an experiment. This summer the company will roll out several campaigns and the user response will be closely monitored.

DJ Shadow’s free BitTorrent release complete with sponsored software can be downloaded here, or via the in-app uTorrent advert.

Cockblocking between the developers and the actual users! Once asked a simple question, showed my stats, my setup, said how I had searched for an answer, didn’t find one, and told them that uTorrent was awesome and had greatly improved my quality of life! ~~~> Erased my question and banned me.

No shit. Bundling adware and crapware with the install is not the way to go.

Instead, they should just display some static banner ads during the installation process. That way nobody has to put shit on their system and every utorrent installation gets to be monetized.

      • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Well, to be fair…if what is installed is functional, doesn’t consume my resources and doesn’t give ad agencies my own name and id…then I’m as OK with it as I would be installing a free android app which displayed ads when you turned it on.

It’s a step in the right direction, at least. You could compare it to a decentralized spotify model.

      • Timmy Junior

You’re suggestion wouldn’t work. Static banners wouldn’t earn the artists shit. As seen with Grooveshark and YouTube, a simple banner ad barely makes any revenue unless you have a LOT of fans aka mainstream artist. The indie artists would only get possibly just $1 from it. YouTube has video ads, which pay them a little more, but even that’s not that great (but it’s a good improvement).

If you really want the industry to start giving music for free, we need a method which gives them enough money in return. Aka, installations. $1 per install is quite easy. Or even CPA giving the artists $40 per sale of something (as an example). Even then it’s still hard to get people to actually buy/install stuff advertised.

        • Guest

Why would a toolbar or searchbar maker give $1 per installation? What will he get from people installing his free shit?

        • http://afdit.co.uk AFD

I think the solution might be to have an ad link to the artist’s website / collection page with a flattr button on it.

That ad could be in the corner of youtube vids / grooveshark sidebar / as a file in  with the album you download.

You press it, you pay what you want (or a percentage of your defined flattr amount for the month) and everyone’s happy.

        • Sqffsqsdf

you know just nothing about it!
          youtube: 1000views =2.5 dollar
so if you got a lot of fans you earn money…

Kind of. You install uTorrent or uT+, and you get exclusive content that you download once you install the package.

  • Educated

A step in the right direction, but I doubt many will install it. About as useless as most of the new options that uTorrent has been coming up with lately.

    • FrostyC

I would install it to support any artists I enjoy. (It’s not like you can’t remove it directly afterwards) The real test would be to get a popular big name artist like Ludacris or Eminem to put out a song using this model and test the revenue stream with that of a CD single/iTunes track. Which model has a larger payout per song?

  • Guest

It’s always great to see people experimenting with free distribution. I love to support such efforts. My face fell when I realized the cost they were suggesting was one I wasn’t willing to pay. Real Player. For real? Like, really? Gah!

Just let me donate or something. Please. I’ll pay $20 not to have to download Real Player.

(Please note, the download is not required – it’s just how you support the artist)

    • http://twitter.com/nuk3d Brock

Since I doubt it would ever be a forced install, it’s not that bad, it’s just data you’re downloading, which you can more than likely even just stop all together in the file view. It’s not really even something to get annoyed over. Just IMO, of course.

but whinos just gotta whine, or else there is no meaning left in their lives.

      • Techanon

That depends entirely in how the torrent file is packaged.
If the content and the ad-files are on diferent files inside the torrent, then yes you can opt to skip downloading the ad-files. If they are all zipped into a single file, then you can’t skip downloading the ad-files.

I used Real Player like 12 years ago but quickly switched to the MusicMatch Player instead until they started ruining it in later builds and then found it to be useless after they sold out to Yahoo. I’ve been using JetAudio v6.2.6 Plus VX for playing and converting/ripping audio files the last few years. All the newer builds of JetAudio suck just like all the newer versions of µTorrent suck. Will not use the crappy Windows media player because it will only play Microshit media files. I use the VLC Media Player for playing all my video files and DVD’s and it will play almost any type of audio or video media files out there. I only use Quicktime pro for converting apple lossless files to wave files.

Oh so this is what they were doing instead of helping the trackers out last week?
So it’s all about the revenue streams after all, huh?Not that they’ll make much cash this way.”Do you also want to download System Clogger with this torrent?”"Uhm, no thanks, especially not from a load of arrogant bastards like you who have a  track history of not caring about their users, that software could be anything.”

  • ItsNotParanoia

I like this idea, but as a chronic “custom-install-nope-nope-nope”-er I’m afraid I won’t be helping out the artists this time.

IMHO DJ Shadow has it back to front – He should release a promo bundle based on his latest album – the tracks people want and will search for. The first and last tracks thank the user for downloading the latests album and asks that if they like what they hear, there is an expanded edition with includes the Hidden Transmissions and bonus guff for sale on his site and a donate button too.

I think anything digital will be shared. He needs to ‘reward’ people buying the album with a shirt or some non-digital merch. That’s it. That’s all you can do nowadays.

    • Scary_Devil_Monastery

It’s the same way ad pages on websites still generate revenue – even though there are plenty of adblockers out there. As long as the advertising is discreet and tasteful, very few mind having to look at a few ads.

And the money is all generated by ads. Some people will also decide to purchase the pro version of uTorrent and the supporting services around it.

I’m in a hardrock band (Nihil Quest) and I give away my music free. Although I would like to see money for this hard work I don’t think installing some crap is a good move. Artists need to be respected and supported but they also have to respect their fans. Giving them searchbars is not the way you show respect.

    • Danny

      ‘Hard Work’

A very questionable statement coming from an ‘artist’. Try working on a rig for 6 months and then see what you think hard work is.

      • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Actually…most indie artists spend around a dozen years hauling their gear from one seedy pub to the next for a nickle and a dime, slowly getting better and gaining fans before they hit it big, if ever.

Working on a rig at least means a steady paycheck, hazard pay, some sort of health plan and the security of knowing where your next meal comes from.

Of course, I’m not exactly talking about SONY’s hyped “flavor-of-the-month” niche market fillers who can be marketed with no other asset than their looks, good lip syncing, intensive-course choreography and a slew of professionals writing and performing their songs for them…

Now that is the definition of useless for you…find good-looking doofus/bimbo, add props = Instant “Artist”…

        • Danny

I used to help my brother haul his bands crap around, they were a fairly big band in the local area until a woman came between them and split them up.

It was never hard work and always involved a few beers. But they did it for the love of the music and not for money so I guess that is the real difference. I think bands of today loose sight of what music is about, it isn’t a magical ticket to lots of cash its actually an enjoyable pastime that is supported by a real job.

  • Exit2DOS

It could work. Yeah, I checked out DJ Shadow’s go at it. I doubt that any crapware will end up _actually_getting_installed_ though! Besides, crapwaer is freely available over the internet. why punish a an artist with an association like that?

I don’t want Big Media/Big Content to shift to BitTorrent. The money should not go to any middlemen, period. Their job of marketing and distribution has been made obsolete by the Internet. All the money should go directly to the artists and content creators.

        > “We must fight piracy so that digital distribution will be profitable also in the future.”

Must? Why must we that? Society has no need whatsoever for the antique business model of digital distribution, because people can perform that for themselves for free?

As you are fully aware of there exists no evidence whatsoever that supports the thesis that on-line non-profit piracy constitutes any kind of problem to neither society, the economy, culture, the creators, the content industry’s current record revenues or the goal with copyright, so why must piracy be fought?

There’s no economical rule that says the a certain business model must continue to exist through out history out of principle? If people and society don’t want or need the business model it’s gone, simple economics 101.

        > “Why should artists lower themselves by having to sell pins, shirts etc. instead of just the music?”

Lower themselves? Do you consider operating on the free market to lowering oneself? Do you have a problem with the free market? Are you advocating communism or a planned economy?

Secondly, you can not sell music. As you are fully aware of the only thing that can be sold is goods and services(an indisputable fact that can be verified in consumer legislation), and music constitutes neither, and therefore it can not be sold.

”So, ‘reward’ those paying money for your digital work with some non-digital merch. Shirts, etc. That’s the only way forward.”

If I may say, this seems like a bad solution. I’m a videogame pirate. I love videogames. I play them whenever I can. And the funny thing about that is, I don’t want videogame merchandise. At all. You could probably give me a shirt with any game on it, and I’d give it back to you, or give it to charity, because it’s worthless to me. I won’t wear the shirt because I generally wear nicer clothes (at least a collared shirt). I might conceivably use a poster if given one, but I would never pay for one.

I can only speak for myself (and every other gamer I know), but I’m more likely to just pay for a game because I feel like supporting the developers than because I’ll get some piece of crap bundled with it that I didn’t want anyway.

Actually, now that I think about it, I’d like to ask a question. Why do music fans like merchandise so much? I don’t see this that much in the videogame community, and I’ve never understood why people like stuff with a band’s name printed on it (I’m sorry if that sounds like a rude description. I don’t intend it to be, but I’m not sure how else to phrase it).

Him being a pirate, which he has openly admitted to being one, is without a doubt the least immoral part of his personality, even if one considers piracy to be immoral. More immoral would be his astonishing opinions which range from being against copyright, against property rights, against free religion, against the free market, against successful entrepreneurs, against the judicial system, due process and legitimate legislation, against human rights, against the democratic system with elected governing officials receiving salaries, at the same time as he’s advocating fascism, censorship, dictatorship legislation, violations of human rights, treason, a combination of communism and planned economy, private bailouts to failed industries and wasting scarce resources that was intended to protect pre-pubertal children from sexual abuse.

These rather strange opinions leads him to being against billions of people, something he openly discloses in his signature.

Regarding the claims in the comment above, i can easily provide links to your previous comments from the last three years where every single one of those opinions of yours are clearly displayed and admitted.

          > “..you’re one of the most evil persons around in the Internet forums..”

          Moahahaha!! =)

          > “..ad hominem is your alter ego.”

Coming from the person that has committed so much personal attacks that he has been banned from several blogs because of it. Although you have openly admitted to not understanding when you do so, and also admitted to doing it on purpose as a revenge act.

And again he replies without arguments, facts or anything else we can do something with….

          > “And again he replies without arguments, facts or anything else we can do something with….”

I’m not sure if again is the most suitable word to use after three years of that continuously repeated exact behaviour.. =)

As your diatribes are a matter of public record there is no doubt that any call for “moderation” will be performed against a backdrop of your own oft-stated opinions.

And that includes three years worth of lies, ad hominem attacks, wall-to-wall strawman argumentation and rampaging ignorance. In no less than three forums now.

Here’s a clue – if you spend years lying and engaging in personal attacks and slander, any call from you will by most moderators quite simply be considered flagrant hypocrisy and nothing else.

Something you have yourself repeatedly proven on many occasions.

And calling Fredrika “one of the most evil persons around in the Internet forums”…Ah, yes. Quite comparable to, say, the westboro baptist church, to the people openly applauding Breivik and Bin Laden, and to militant anti-abortionists calling for murder and rape of nurses

I have no problem believing that in the world inside your own head, having and stating a pro-pirate opinion does indeed constitue “evil” on a scale surpassing that of fanatics bent on murder.

Once again all you do is show this forum your true colors.

I’ve flagged your posting as well as the one from your partner in Ad hominem, Fredrika.

Stop humiliating yourselves, focus on the issues instead of lies and Ad hominem.

I think the only relatively good option to monetize torrents would be to include ads within the torrent application itself when someone downloads a specific torrent, but that would have to be implemented by more than just one developer and I don’t see that happening. Another route could be to include a .html file or some sort of brochure in the torrent, I suppose.

People are freaking out over the realplayer but actually check this page out, they’re doing this in the best way possible. It’s not a utorrent exe bundle like I was expecting it to be, it’s simply a .torrent file you can download with any client you like. It contains all the tracks, in both wav and mp3, you can choose what you like. It includes a video, which is in both mp4 and mkv containers. You don’t have to download the realplayer exe at all, or even use utorrent!
