uTorrent’s Vista Sidebar Gadget

Written by Ernesto on May 07, 2007

This new gadget for uTorrent allows you to monitor and handle your .torrent downloads from Vista’s sidebar. The gadget works in combination with the uTorrent WebUI, an extension that inspired many people to develop useful and innovative gadgets.

utorrent webui vista gadgetThe widget shows the current upload and download speed in the sidebar. The flyout shows all the torrents you’re downloading, and detailed info like the number of seeds & peers, ratio, availability, download & upload limit, and much more.

But the gadget is not limited to listing information, you can also:

- drag & drop to add new torrents
- start, stop pause torrents
- set priority for individual files

It’s based on the “Azureus stats” gadget for Windows Vista, but has some extra features. The WebUI works on 32-bit as well as the 64-bit Vista, and it has a auto update function.

The sidebar gadget will only work if you run the uTorrent webUI. The WebUI makes it easy to access uTorrent from an external computer, and it opens up a world of possibilities for uTorrent users to create fancy widgets, scripts, and other add-ons.

To enable the webui go to Options –> Preferences –> Advanced –> WebUI, and enter you details there. There is also FireFox extension available for the WebUI.

The latest Beta of the Vista sidebar gadget for uTorrent can be downloaded over here. You can track the latest updates, or post your questions and suggestions in the thread over at the uTorrent forums.

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

Wow! I didn’t know about this gadget until now, and I’m glad I found it on your site! It’s GREAT, just the kind of thing I needed, because I have a personal home server that I keep online and running all the time, so now I can keep track of it on my main computer!

Thanks!

Rodmaster,
got this from the utorrent forum:

Go in µTorrent to options->preferences->Advanced->WebUI, and there you enable the webinterface set a username, a password (and a port if you want to choose the number yourself)

Do this at the PC you’re running µTorrent on.

The gadget you can run on the same computer or another one, that is connected to the one running µTorrent

If you run it on the same computer the ip/url will be 127.0.0.1
if you run it on a remote computer the ip/url will be the ip of the computer running µTorrent wich you can find by doing this on the computer with µtorrent: start->run->cmd->ipconfig.

Hope you’ll be able to set it up

Just remove the gadget from the sidebar and re-add it, you should then see the full view. Works like a charm. Cheers.

It took me a while to get it working. Finally i figured out that even if I leave the port at 8080 i still had to check the box in uTorrent advanced that says alternative listening port. I think because my uTorrent port is a different one set up for forwarding. Dunno if this helps anyone else out there. If it doesn’t work keep trying, it’s SICK when it does!!

Hey, guys …
I have one question. Everything is working fine with the WebUI in the torrent program and in the IE 7. I can open and access it from the browser and everything’s fine. But I can’t do the settings in the gadget so that it can work properly. No matter what I write in the Gadget’s settings it keeps telling me: “Error, check settings”. I can’t realy understand what the “Part between ‘http://’ and ‘:PORT’” is. And if I write in the WebUI URL the URL address shall I write it as I write it in the IE (a.k.a. http://MYIP:PORT/gui) or just the IP/gui and in the WebUI Port tab to put the port. I’m a little bit confused about that. I tryed everything but it still keeps telling me to check the settings.
Any suggestions, please ?
