VLC Player Vulnerable to Remote Hijack
Written by Ernesto on March 18, 2008VLC Player, one of the best and most widely used media players has found to be vulnerable to a remote hijack. The reported vulnerability makes it possible for a malicious user to run arbitrary code, potentially taking remote control of the host machine.
VLC is a popular media player among BitTorrent users. Not just for the fact that it is free, also because it includes a huge number of the video codecs, so it can play virtually every video file available.
Unfortunately, the latest versions of VLC have a security flaw according to a report from Luigi Auriemma. The vulnerability can be exploited to compromise a user’s system, as it leaves it wide open for a malicious user to run arbitrary code.
The problem occurs when a someone loads a subtitle file, which causes a buffer overflow that can be exploited. The security flaw is platform independent, which means it affects Windows, Mac and Linux users.
Initially it was reported that the flaws in version 0.8.6d were fixed in the latest release, but this turns out not to be the case. Auriemma writes: “The old buffer-overflow in the subtitles handled by VLC has not been fully patched in version 0.8.6e.”
“The funny thing is that my old proof-of-concept was built just to test this specific buffer-overflow and in fact it works on the new VLC version too without modifications,” he adds.
For now, the only solutions are not to run any subtitle files, or to grab one of the nightly builds. The downside is, however, that these might not be as stable as the regular releases.

Oh dear, glad I don’t use subtitles!
VLC does really rock!
ha. glad i dont use VLC
CCCP+MPC is far superior to VLC
VLC is le hardcore
Agreed with post #3.
vlc sucks at rendering subtitles anyway. Just use mpc and combined community codec pack on windows and mplayer on mac if you want decent subs.
I dont need subs, I just watch the raw.
Good that VLC is free software so that people can take care of it. A flaw in a proprietary piece of software would probably be swept under the rug because it would interfere with marketing. Or worse, it could intentionally be used to exploit users.
Never use subtitles so. pfft.
Luckily for me I speak every language in the world, including dead ones, and therefore don’t need subtitles.
KMPlayer is superior to everything and it looks good unlike VLC

MPC+CCCP. Fuck VLC and its propriatary codecs.
VLC has propriatary codecs? What are you smoking? I don’t have any respect for people who use anything but MPlayer. MPlayer kills them all and lets god sort ‘em out.

Windows = CCCP
Everything else = MPlayer
On Mac there is no other player worth using. PC VLC kinda sucks but I use it because I am use to VLC on mac.
I would have to say the most users do not use the subtitle function. I have only used it with dotHACK.

Yes. Unlike ffdshow for example, you cannot use VLC’s codecs with any other application except VLC, proprietary. VLC is for idiots that dont know or dont care what codecs they need so use VLC which uses its own libcodecs which are useless if ever you need to do anything outside of VLC, and you’d need to find the ones you needed anyway, like FLAC, XviD or Divx. And its pretty useless with HD content like AVC and TS.

Are you stupid? VLC uses libavcodec, from the ffmpeg project (mplayer uses this too). It’s completely free and open source.

XD
Read what I said above about VLC using libavcodec, from the ffmpeg probject.
Guess what?
Ffdshow does too!
Just because something is not a directshow filter (like ffdshow is, allowing you to use it on all directshow players like windows media player and mpc) doesn’t mean it is proprietary.
CCCP is a joke. VLC works just fine(especially for linux). There are better stuff out than CCCP like KMP.

Can its codecs be used with any other application? No, they are exclusivly for VLC. Exclusive use = proprietary. Try reading a fucking dictionary. That has nothing to do with wether the components are open sourced or not, they are specificaly coded for VLC.

Yes, because they come from another project and are used in many other applications (including mplayer and ffdshow).
VLC USES THE SAME CODECS AS FFDSHOW, EXCEPT FFDSHOW WRAPS THEM FOR USE WITH DIRECTSHOW PLAYERS.

If by “specifically coded for VLC” you mean “coded for the ffmpeg project but is used by many other projects, including VLC and ffdshow” then you’re right. But you didn’t mean that as you didn’t say it, so you’re wrong.

What is the big deal VLC is a nice simple player anyone can load & use. It’s played almost everything just fine for me. For bin/cue movies I use a different player. There are so many players, why is everyone arguing over a player.
I even saw them VLC being used to run movies on a wall of TV’s in Circuit City of all places!?

So what if it ain’t perfect, I hate this sh*t that people talk “Oh it doesn’t do (insert tiny non-consequential feature here) so it’s a pile of crap!” BS. Hey you have a choice, if you don’t like the free stuff, get your wallet out and pay for one or shut up and have a pop at helping to fix it and make it better, even better still write your own better one, that’s the OSS spirit. Living in a semi-free country using OSS, we can at least challenge these things and help improve them, if MS and Mr Jobs had their way we’d all be under their thumbs doing it their way.
This is why I use GOM.
GOM will play everything, subs or even mp4/ipod format vids (not sure if VLC can?).
It also has a much better GUI than VLC (user friendly vs. utilitarian) and drag and drop for playlists.
I’ll never go back to VLC, ever.
So where is the code written in the subtitles?
And also couldn’t you just open the subtitles with notepad or text edit and check? I mean if its a script wouldn’t it be easy to search for? like “//” or something?
Try using the 0.9 beta. I’m running it on wintel and linux and had no problems so far - nice new QT4 interface.

Just check out subtitles before using them.
The nightly builds of VLC are less stable than the normal builds? So I guess that means it crashes or screws up 90% of the time instead of just 80%?
The built in codecs are nice, but it sucks at pretty much everything else. It’s slower than any other player, it crashes often, it usually doesn’t display the video until at least 10-15 seconds in and then you have to start it over to see the start, and the full-screen controls are a joke.
They’re trying to add every feature under the sun, but they never actually get any of them working properly before they move onto something else.

Are you somehow slightly brain-challenged?
The codec you’re referring to is inside of VLC and cannot be used externally to VLC itself. It doesn’t matter that ffdshow and VLC are both using a build of the libavcodec. VLC does absolutely nothing for anything but itself when it is installed on a given machine, while ffdshow can be utilized by many media players on the same machine. That’s the difference. VLC keeps the codec to its own use, while ffdshow shares the wealth.
Get it yet?
This forum software is slightly brain-challenged as well, since it quotes myself in the post above instead of “Anonymous.”
Which makes me look brain-challenged for not noticing it beforehand. :)

two shay
Stop the VLC bashing. I have used it on my Macs since version 4. Was and is a great player. Not many crashes, plays everything except WMV10, playlists work just fine, fullscreen controls are better then QuickTime’s, works with the Apple remote (menu button = fullscreen) and is configurable to the n-th degree. Open Source and free, no file opening lags like QT-player so what’s not to like? I don’t care which codecs it uses, it works and video looks great (except for some WMV9 files). It’s become a cornerstone of my universe and the main reason I don’t use QT, DVD Player or FrontRow.

But this GOM is worth a try. I see no point why we should keep on using always the same player, browser, whatever, why not try something new?
The fact that vlc codecs can’t be used from other progs, is a bad point, but doens’t make vlc that bad…

you should try to install mplayer from source, you would usually have to download the vlc codecs to play any proprietary format.
The fact that vastly superior software like MPlayer but also VLC do install any codecs is a HUGE ADVANTAGE you fucktards. They will not screw your complete multimedia subsystem by installing conflicting, buggy, poor-performing codecs. Instead they are fully self-contained applications. A video doesn’t play fine with them? Fine try another player or just get rid of them if you don’t like them. No damage done. Now install a codec pack instead - that is not a virus actually. Maybe some of your applications (like a game) cannot play videos or audio at all anymore because of a codec incompatibility.
Of course MPlayer but also VLC can play “ipod MP4″. Why? It’s a dumbed-down variant of MPEG-4, the ipod player does not fully implement MPEG-4, so they often cannot play “MP4″ files you’ll find in the wild. The encoder has to avoid a couple of standard features (like B-frames *cough*) in order to guarantee that Apple software like Quicktime and the ipod software can play these files. Of course that means reduced quality or increased filesize. Therefore, any standard-compliant player can play these anyway.

VLC has propriatary codecs? What are you smoking? I don’t have any respect for people who use anything but MPlayer. MPlayer kills them all and lets god sort ‘em out.
Why is it so wrong to not want to manually manage codecs.? I’ve got more pressing issues in life than 1337 h4×0r1ng video playback. I don’t need pristine image or audio, 99% of the time, and if I did, I’ve got other options. Anyone remember the time before VLC? When you had to stop everything, and go research the frigging esoteric codec BonerX encoded with? Wasn’t that fun? And didn’t you feel superior and h4×0ry when you found it? Trolling scam sites for the fix? No thank you. VLC, I live by your code. And I await your fix. Because I use subs once in a while, and would like to continue doing so.

I think you’re right, but really, who cares? If VLC’ll play it for me, do I need other appz to be redundant? Holy, “I made a choice, and now everybody suffers for it”, Batman. I have a player that came with my pricey soundcard (yes, my SOUNDcard), that plays like 90% of what I throw at it, at unreal quality, upsampling Audio on-the-fly, as well. So, VLC and CMP take care of just about anything I need.

You fucktard meant “do NOT install any codecs”. Otherwise I agree because I wrote it.
This case only deals when soft subs are being used on VLC player. Sure VLC does most things well, however it has problems with softsubs in many cases. Someone posted a comparison earlier in the thread, although the issue usually isn’t that bad, softsubs typically has a good deal of issues on the VLC player and in this case, VLC should not be used at all for these files as in this case. Everything else VLC does well, but for this case there is better software (such as MPC+CCCP.)

99% of people just want to be able to get a video file, and watch it. All the rest is just about seeing whose dick is bigger.

The only reason I use VLC is because every other players fucks up my video scaling with my 8800GTX. And ofcourse nvidia the money hungry bastards that they are claim they have fixed the problem, when they have not. So it looks like VLC is FTW. Unless some1 else knows of a better player that wont fucked up video scaling.

its fun to quote
“99% of people just want to be able to get a video file, and watch it.”
That’s why MPlayer is the best choice. Not only does it play everything under sun, it has proper soft-sub rendering in contrast to VLC. Further MPlayer does not annoy me with a useless, bloated, slow GUI. It is simply perfect in so far that you don’t have to do shit to play files but it’s powerful so that you can do a hell lot of things IF YOU WANT TO. It’s perfect for power users as well for n00bs - brain-less monkeys excluded. For you wankers who have no hands free for typing and are generally to retarted to understand how to navigate quickly in a shell, there are GUI front-ends, too, of course.

Just about every media player has had its share of security problems, anything which reaches out into the internet is going to have a problem eventually, if it is a program it can be exploited, eventually, somehow, someway.
[Oh yeah? What about...] No one cares, shut up, and fuck you.
Quit polishing your e-penis over which media player you think is better, we all have our opinion, we don’t need to hear endless barking by a bunch of pasty geeks and wannabe geeks who are just taking a break from masturbating to another dirty crack whore’s beefy pussy or part time plumber’s happy hairy anus.

Open source allows us the freedom to freely choose and use multiple media players. We are not confined to the Windows mentality, nor should we act like the Windows users and their feeble sheep minds.
Install any media player you want in Linux, enjoy what you want, they are free and open source. Quit your bitching over projects you probably have no investment in, financial or otherwise, and thank your lucky stars you have the freedom to choose and use these programs.
Why the HELL did you have to post it here? Why didn’t you inform the devs instead!? You’re an idiot…
As long as their is more than one choice for anything then everyone will have a favourite and perceived best choice. I use vlc. You may use something else. It’s called “choice” and it’s not wrong.
I think I’d rather discuss world peace rather than a flame war about which media viewer is “best”.
Nay, it’s called “choice” because there are good choices and bad choices. World peace is overrated! Capitalism needs war just as humans need blood.

About some godly folk who claims to speak all languages.
“99% of people just want to be able to get a video file, and watch it.”

Yes anything but linux (without a gui of course) sucks and are for brainless monkeys. Heck even linux is for brainless monkeys. We should all use 1010101010111s to do tasks, not use some fancy gui with text and commands or stuff. I bet you typed that comment with a keyboard using letters. Noob. Lawl.
has anyone given any thought to simply yanking the computer offline for a bit to enjoy a movie with subtitles???
i dont get it…
oh and this idiotic slamming of vlc… vlc is one of if not the most simple and stable player out there… go back to playing your online game and eating by yourself…. and all the other things that you do by yourself… idiots
So I decided to build mplayer from source the other day, and what do you know? I didn’t have to get a codec pack and I specified the gui option on the configure script. It plays everything. Only thing I had to get was the skin for the gui. (This is on windows by the way.)
The only reason I don’t like vlc, beyond the slow/buggy reasons, is that it butchers soft or embedded subs. If it had an option to use direct vobsub that would be great, but it doesn’t. Even mplayer can be forced to use ffdshow with a directshow avisynth script. VLC I don’t know…
Stop the VLC bashing.
Then I guess someone spent time to work the bugs out of the Mac version, because none of that applies to the Windows port.
Before version 8, VLC wouldn’t play videos at all on my system. Earlier versions just crashed or did nothing. Version 7 played the videos, but the audio sounds like someone scratching a needle across a record (If it’s still online, there was mention of this in the VLC forums).
Version 8 mostly works, however it has crashed/locked up on me on numerous occasions. At one point, I had both the fullscreen and widescreen versions of a movie as AVI files. I opened both in Media Player Classic so that I could compare them side by side. It worked great, even playing the full audio from both (which I had to mute in one as I could never get them perfectly synced so there was an echo effect). I tried that with VLC on the same system. Both copies went off into limbo, displaying one frame every 10 seconds or so and the audio just stuttered endlessly, “Jit-jit-jit-jit-jit-jit…”
I tried using it to play DVDs since it’s supposed to be able to defeat the region code. It didn’t. I used it on a proper region DVD and the picture looked like crap because it was interlaced. I went to the menu to try out the de-interlacing options. It crashed.
As for the full-screen controls, well they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here’s a picture of VLC playing a cheap DVD with the full-screen controls activated;
http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vlc1cv8.jpg
Can you spot the part I didn’t like? Not to mention that if you click the close button, it doesn’t close the controls, it closes VLC!
By contrast, MPC (and most players) pop up a control bar across the bottom of the screen when you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen.
Luckily for me I’ve seen every movie and video clip ever made or will be made, and therefore don’t need subtitles.
@97 - alt-tab back to the full screen and it’s all good. Just learn the keyboard shortcuts and then you don’t need the controls GUI.
Besides, vlc is still in Beta development. There are plans to add proper full screen controls. Don’t be a hater just because it’s not perfect yet.
alt-tab is a windows shortcut, not vlc. If anything, just use it from the command line so you don’t have to mess with the gui. Unless there isn’t a fullscreen flag. I haven’t checked. I tried batch transcoding with vlc, it would output unusable files with the wrong extension. The main thing with vlc is it does everything, only not well. I’d rather have 5 apps that work well than 1 that doesn’t. At least with FFDSHOW I can use it as an encoder for every codec it has.
Visit this too!

i think it doesn’t UBUNTU 7.10 users like me. It is only a problem for users of the worst OS on the planet, Windows…lolllll
KMPlayer is 100 times better than any other player. Like VLC it plays everything internally but is faster, better looking and more stable. It also plays RAR’ed files directly, without extracting first. You should try it, you’ll love it!
You can get KMPlayer directly from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/80485226/kmp.exe
@97 - alt-tab back to the full screen and it’s all good. Just learn the keyboard shortcuts and then you don’t need the controls GUI.
After reading the above, I was going to post that the hotkeys didn’t make up for the lack of a position slider, but then I figured I should give it a fair chance. So I loaded VLC, went to Help menu and discovered that there wasn’t a help file (like most open source software). So I looked in the VLC dir and found a link to docs on the VLC web site. When I got to the section on hotkeys I found that you have to go into the prefs to even find out the defaults. So I did that and saw that “t” is listed as “position”. Of course there’s no explanation of exactly what the “position” hotkey does, since open source authors can’t be bothered to write proper docs for their programs.
I figured I’d just try it. So I opened a 360MB AVI file and VLC promptly locked up my system. The mouse pointer wouldn’t move and the sound was stuck in an endless loop. I pressed the reset button, then had to wait 20+ minutes for Scandisk to finish searching for crosslinked files (yes, I know I can abort that, but every time I do, the amount of free space on the drive ends up being off by several hundred megs).
So it finally finishes and Windows loads back up. I load VLC again and open the same AVI file. The audio starts playing, but as usual, there’s no video for at least the first 10-20 seconds of the file. I hit Stop, then play it again. This time, there’s no video at all. I close and re-load VLC, then open the file again (after browsing to the right directory again, since VLC doesn’t bother to remember the last directory used). 10-20 seconds of blank picture, then the video starts playing, but at about 5-10 frames a second. Needless to say it’s jerky as hell. I go to the menus and use the fullscreen option and the screen goes black, but with the big, empty GUI window over it.
At that point, I gave up in disgust.
Not perfect? VLC is so unstable that I’m afraid to run it while I have anything else running for fear that it will crash my system. Even when it doesn’t, its performance is so poor that it comes in at the bottom of the list for just about every other general purpose media player available for Windows.
In the interest of being honest, I should state that I’m still using Windows 98SE. Yes, I’ve heard all the arguments for upgrading, but at the moment, 98SE does pretty much everything I want (with the exception of being compatible with the latest commercial games).
And before you blame my system for VLC’s crashes, consider this; For the past month, I’ve been downloading episodes of various TV shows from the newsgroups. As the episodes download, I’ve been watching them, while continuing to download more episodes in the background. Different shows, even different seasons, are done by different groups and encoded differently. I’ve been using Media Player Classic & ffdshow to view them. I haven’t had a single crash. The first time I tried to view one of these files with VLC, it locked up my system. The second time, it played, but very choppy (the example I listed above). The exact same file plays perfectly in MPC.
Who cares if they improve the controls when the player itself sucks? The only reason I even have it on my system at all is for Quicktime videos, since the latest versions of QT no longer work under W98.
“since open source authors can’t be bothered to write proper docs for their programs.”
Death sentence to you.
I don’t see why people are arguing about which one is better, holy shit can you only let user choice what they want. Goddammit, do you have something to prove ? Is arguing that the player you use is better than other will add something more in your life, leading to a lacking superiority feeling ?
This is ridiculous.
Shit i use it with anime welp i’m fucked.
