Vuze 4.5 Brings Faster Downloads and Android Support

The Vuze team has released version 4.5 of the popular BitTorrent client. With this latest release users can easily optimize their settings based on an elaborate speed test, which should increase download speeds in many cases. In addition, users can now transcode, transfer, and playback downloaded files on many of the most popular Android phones.

vuzeWith more than 100 million downloads of the application since 2007, Vuze is one of the most recognized BitTorrent brands. The client is used by millions of people each day and has a steadily growing user-base.

Over the last year Vuze’s BitTorrent client has evolved into an all-in-one download solution. With built in search, DVD-burning capabilities and device integration the Vuze team has set itself aside from other popular BitTorrent clients.

Vuze’s device integration with iTunes, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PSP and TiVo has been one of the most appreciated functions among users. Nearly 5 million users have been dragging and dropping videos to their devices, totaling well over 100 million videos.

With the release of Vuze 4.5 that was announced today, users of Android devices now also have the option to automatically transcode, transfer, and playback downloaded files. Several models including the HTC Evo, HTC Hero, HTC Incredible, HTC Magic, Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid X and Samsung Vibrant are already fully supported, and more will be added upon request.

Aside from Android integration, the Vuze team has been focusing on how to improve download speeds for its users. To tackle some of the most common speed constraints the latest Vuze release now includes a thorough speed test and optimizer to ensure that users get the most out of the client.

“We implemented the speed test to maintain power users’ ability to control their own settings – all manual controls still exist – while addressing the fact that a large number of users request additional help in optimizing their settings. Based on initial testing, many people should see significant increases in download speeds after running the speed test,” Vuze’s Director of Marketing Chris Thun told TorrentFreak.

Vuze’s speed test

vuze

The basic speed test uses MLab‘s Network Diagnostic Test to quickly test users upload/download capacity the first time they launch the latest version of Vuze. The client then uses the results of the speed test to adjust the following Vuze settings:

  • Upload rate limit (80% of the measured limit)
  • Maximum active torrents (seeding+downloading)
  • Maximum downloading torrents
  • Maximum upload slots per torrent
  • Maximum peer connections per torrent (when downloading and when seeding)
  • Maximum global peer connections

Via the Vuze Help Menu, users can run additional speed tests later. If the first test detects a reasonably high upload rate it will automatically add a follow-on MLab tool. This tool checks for ISP traffic shaping by prolonging the test for a couple of extra minutes, so it is able to detect the speed trend beyond the short-term burst at the beginning of a connection.

If traffic shaping occurs, Vuze will adjust the settings to ensure that they are properly updated for the best download speeds. This usually means that if the long-term uploads speed is significantly lower than the initial test, the setting will be optimized accordingly.

Vuze 4.5 is available for download at the Vuze website. The full changelog with new features, changes and the latest bugfixes is available on SourceForge.

  • Hom3r

uTorrent has had built in speed test for a while… even if Vuze’s speed test happens to be a bit better, Vuze is bloatware which will slow down your computer, canceling out any small increase in speed.

“Upload rate limit (80% of the measured limit)”
uTorrent’s uTP uses 100% of the available upload, dynamically throttling the limit when other applications need it. (In other words: Vuze will be slower).

  • Truther

As I have said before I’ll be sticking to Vuze until uTorrent gets its new features out of beta. So I’m happy to see the update.

Why cry about Vuze’s System resource footprint.

Have you looked at your browser ? ? ?

Firefox can use a hell of a lot more resources than Vuze.

Vuze has way way way better features than uTorrent.

I am not a vuze fanboy…. I use both utorrent and vuze. Depends on the site , as to which client i use.

Vuze would be my preference everytime.

    To the Utorrent fanboys….
    …… GO….. I DARE YOU…….

Run Vuze AND your web browser.

Then LOOK at resource usage. and view reality.

THEN come back and cry about your web browser using to much resources.

  • Question about tracking

Quick question: I just got an Email from Cox about warning me that I was accused of downloading copyrighted stuff.

I currently use BitTorrent 6.4. Tried Vuse a few years ago, but it made my whole PC slow, even when I’m not downloading stuff.

What do you guys recommend? Is one software more “secure” than another? Is there really a way to download things to reduce the chances of being traced? I know there’s no “magic pill” out there that eliminates it completely.

    Thanks for the help.

@ #7 – comparing a BT client with your effing WEB BROWSER is ridiculous. A BT client gets a file from the cloud to my computer. A web browser does…EVERYTHING ELSE.

And yeah, I ditched Vuze because I was sick of it slowing my computer down to a crawl (or blue screening it back when I used a USB modem). Good interface and all that, but terribly coded.

I have never, ever encountered the mandatory toolbar.
Even if it would be mandatory, I guess it wouldn’t be too hard to force it off.

I have been using this client as Azureus, before this Vuze extra function bullshit appeared.
To me most of the “extra features” are bullshit, dvd burning, transcoding, video playback, iTunes, either I don’t need them at all or I already have better alternatives.
There are a couple others that I consider as a good or passable idea, yet I don’t use them for some reason, like remote pairing, subscriptions, search or the Vuze network.
But because I ignore all the bullshit by not using them at all, I like Azureus(OK, I know it’s called Vuze now, but I HATE the new name it’s just fucking gay like justin bieber).
IMHO Azu’s greatest advantage over µTorrent is the plug-in system, particularly because it offers compatibility with different DHT implementations.
    Azureus FTW!

  • uLoop

There is one thing though, Azu really does eat a huge amount of memory compared to µTorrent, so I would recommend to use that on slow computers/netbooks/nettops, but if you have a decent computer there is no slowdown, so its up to your personal preferences.

Wow, the first few paragraphs of this article read like marketing BS. Probably because it is marketing BS. I find it a bit surprising Torrentfreak would write such an article. Especially because I remember statistics being posted here that show Vuze is actually losing users.

The reason I won’t ever use Vuze is not because “It’s Java and Java is shit” or “it slows the computer down” or any of the other of the nonsense being spouted all the time.or some such nonsense that is often spouted.
It’s because why the eff would I need all that stuff in a bittorrent client? Most of the Vuze ui is something I wouldn’t have a use for, it’s totally superfluous. I will use a client that will download stuff and do only that and do it well.

  • mremixer

I used to use azureus, but then yes I found vuze too bloated so switched to uTorrent.

However with reading this I figured I’d try vuze out again. I jumped straight back to uTorrent after vuze’s speed test said I only had a max upload of 21.7kbps & had set my max upload at 17.1kbps.

Yes I’d turned all other net connections of apart from vuze before you say it.

On utorrent I get an upload of 130-140 kbps. My download speed is irrelevant for me not because its really fast or really slow I’m more concerned with sharing back than how fast it downloads.

I didn’t even check its footprint/affect on resources, for me it fell at first hurdle BADLY.

  • bhanahan

Honestly? As a Ubuntu user, why the hell aren’t you using Transmission? Its default from canonical and I haven’t found a better client. Like so much good OSS it does exactly what it should, nothing more and nothing less.

It has a html web UI that can be accessed from an in network computer allowing you to run a seedbox easily. You can access your torrents on pretty much anything with a browser, and add/remove from anything with a hard drive. It has a built in blocklist, tiny size and resource profile, and a simple minimalist UI with versatile controls.

I used Vuze on my Ubuntu box and didn’t really give Transmission a chance from my install of Hardy Heron until late into Karmic. When I finally ditched that awful bloatware, and began using Transmission it was like a weight had been lifted from my operating system.

My experience is only with the Linux distro version of Vuze, perhaps a better, more recent version can be compiled for my box, but why bother. Transmission does everything better. Why program your software to do things automatically when you can just make it easier for me to control.

    Vuze = Lose. Transmission FTW!

I prefer something like uTorrent, but with all the new “features” I switched to vuze. I’d really like to see a windows version of transmission tbh though. I just want a simple, open source client that doesn’t have all the extra crap that can be used to monitor your usage -_-

I have tried Vuze several times since in case they fixed it but no joy, it is great for the lazy who are happy to settle for multiple functionality at the expence of effectiveness, however everything it does can be replacde my seperate applictions all of which are faster & more reliable. Since switching to U torrent I have not looked back they are also adding functions but in a optional & much more effective manner.

  • kev

    Isn’t torrent on Android?

  • sense

    fyi…..

The “” speed test / auto setting “”
    is for noobs…
It just makes sure your overall download speed is not hampered(slowed down) ,By setting your upload too high.
WHEN ( ONLY WHEN ) you are conected to LOTS of peers.

Limiting your upload speed , is pointless on private trackers. (99% of the time)

HOWEVER , when downloading a torrent from a public tracker , with lots of peers , Your client can be conected to hundreds of peers.
Your client needs to comunicate with those peers to download from them,
If ALL your upload bandwidth is used to SEED , then there is NO available bandwidth left to request/confirm (comunicate) data with the other peers.

YOUR download speed will be reduced, sometimes dramaticly.

    …………………………..

IF you know what your doing……

you should do ( already do) this…

When you do experiance slow DL speeds due to being conected to , too many peers + seeding to fast.

JUST limit the upload speed for that torrent. ( not the whole client )
    .
    .
Limiting the amount of peers you can conect to is also an option….

HOWEVER….. this will usually slow your download speeds even more when on puplic trackes.

    eg… (public torrent)

you have a 1000kB/s line. (just under 10mb)
    torrent has 700peers & 300seeds ( 1000 total )
Average upload speed per peer is 10kB/s.

So.. to max your conection you need to conected to 100 peers
(all of which, uploading the average 10kB/s)

    REALITY CHECK…

to max out your conection , you will probably need to be, continually conected to 200-300 peers.

limiting the amount of peers you conect to , to less than 200 will not give you full download speed.

  • sense

Lots of people, because it’s the best GUI client in existence.
    @10
FUD is for lame assholes. There is no mandatory installation of anything.

Vuze uses less resources than Firefox. Vuze uses less resources than your virus scanner.

I’d rather have something that uses 2% more of my machine’s resources than something that is closed source, previously MAFIAA-affiliated (remember the studio logos that were on bittorrent.com?), and less versatile.

  • GP

Also, for the asshats whining about Vuze advertising, I can quite clearly see a uTorrent ad at the top of this page right now. So, obviously, uTorrent must suck because they advertise. Wait… that was YOUR retarded argument.

  • horsemeat

Vuze (Azuerus) is bloatware now I agree, I don’t want the uPnp media server or torrent searches or media player or whatever it comes with now, all I want is a torrent client!!!

I used to use it a lot, as for resources well it’s a java app what do you expect? it was never lightweight even when it wasn’t bloat.

The main reason I used it was because…

    A) It ran on any operating system that can run java (Ubuntu Linux in my case).

    B) It supported plugins of which I used (AZSMRC) which let you remotely connect to it to add torrents, not only that it could run separate user accounts to save to different locations.

    C) It could run headless meaning no GUI at all which is the only way I ran it.

    D) It was easy to install and set up with all the above features.

To my knowledge uTorrent can’t do all of these things, and is not platform independent so therefore for me it sucks.

I now run rTorrent along side a apache web server using wTorrent PHP/SQL interface. This is a lot better for me as it does all of the above things apart from being easy to set up, in fact it was a complete bitch and involved me editing PHP code to even get it working properly.

So stop the azuerus/vuze hate, it’s still useful to some people that don’t enjoy spending hours of time getting something to work the way they want it to.

  • horsemeat

Oh if you want a good upnp media server give “ps3mediaserver” a try, it’s the best and only one that works for me for what I want it to do.

Don’t let the name mislead you, it does support more than just the PS3, it can stream to an xbox360 as well (not that I’ve tried).

It’s the only way I can stream 1080p MKV (x.264,AC3,DTS) to the PS3 without transcoding. It could also transcode FLAC to lossless PCM to the PS3 could play it, I tried many other all of them transcoded, or in the case of mediatomb was too much of hard work to get working properly, I don’t like sitting there editing huge chunks of configs and mimetypes and writing my own scripts for ffmpeg, VLC.

The only thing it fails at is 24bit lossless audio, if anyone has a media server that can handle 24bit lossless to a PS3 then I would be a happy bunny.

  • Heiji1412

Azureus was fantastic. Vuze on the other hand is garbage.

I changed to uTorrent awhile back and have never been happier about my decision. Vuze is such a resource hog and just runs slow as shit. (Blame Java)

As far as the Android app is concerned, I may try it. I currently have Swarm installed and considering the fact it connects to a max of 6 peers, it’s awesome. Downloads and uploads like a charm…

  • Bit-bit-beetie
