...Except private trackers have such a dogmatic adherence to high ratio, it's ridiculous. Music is much harder to seed on private trackers because the small file size makes the optimal number of seeders much lower. This, combined with a smaller potential user base, makes it hard to recoup your losses through seeding what you've downloaded alone.

You might argue, "Well, then, contribute!" Disregarding the basic tenets of uploading being a strain (depending on upload speed and file size and user interest, it takes at least a few to several hours to seed long enough that you can hand off your post to seeders and do something else), What.CD's environment isn't very favorable to new seeders. The basic problems are:
1. There is such a large community of contributors already in place, that whatever you have to offer has not only been uploaded, but at a higher quality than you have it.
2. There are very stringent rules to uploading. Minimum bit rate is 192 MP3. They are anti-transcode (so most leaks are hard to get out there).

In other words, in order to successfully maintain a presence on What.CD, you have to either be super-hardcore, offer super-esoteric works that are still guaranteed to get downloads (bit of a paradox there), or have enough access to the music industry to pick up and offer lossless leaks from time to time.

As per the whole "good ratio" deal, the problem with that is there is a fine line between maintaining a ratio that shows you are contributing to the community and hoarding access to data. Unless your primary purpose is to be an uploader (of which What.CD has an excess of), having a ratio above 4 or 5 (or even 2 or 3, if you've moved around enough data (say, above 200 gigs)) simply means you're weakening other torrents by refusing to download them. The more people seed, the less people leech.

The other day, I recall reading a post from a cheggit sysop who was concerned that the seeder/leecher ratio was above 4, when it should be around 1. What.CD's current seeder/leecher ratio is above 53. That is a very unfavorable ratio, benefiting the few with seniority and connections. That is not a community, that is an elitist market.

I respect What.CD's belief in quality, but they have to do something about the excess ratio. If it means a ratio cap for non-VIP members, so be it.
