What Happened to Demonoid, Will it Ever Return?
Written by Ernesto on December 13, 2007Ever since Demonoid decided to pull the plug following pressure from the CRIA, thousands of members are wondering what happened. Perhaps even more importantly, they are asking themselves this: Is Demonoid ever going to come back?
Nobody really seems to know what the future holds for Demonoid, however, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be the most popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker, has given people a little hope.
He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”
Deimos is right, it’s getting harder to find a suitable host. However, it is far from impossible since all the BitTorrent sites that were kicked out by the Dutch ISP Leaseweb found a new home within a week.
So what started the chain of events? The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.
Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.
Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.
After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage:
“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”
The tracker was still working for a few days, but after a while it died as well. At the moment Demonoid.com redirects to the temporary forums, which have an active community but any filesharing is strictly forbidden.
So will Demonoid ever return? Apart from the message posted by Deimos there’s not much to go on. It would be a shame to see it go down like this. Demonoid was one of the most widely used trackers and Deimos has done a lot for the BitTorrent community.
Being a BitTorrent administrator must be a very stressful experience, not to mention time-consuming. When the pressures are finally lifted for someone like Deimos, it will take all the addictive properties of BitTorrent to bring him back. Let’s hope so.
I guess time will tell.

I loved demonoid too. If it never comes back I wish the people who ran it a new, safe life. You must imagine the stress looming over these people trying to keep a site going that may result in their incarceration, this alone is not very good incentive to bring it back. I know if i escaped the hangman’s noose once I wouldn’t try it again! For us to expect that is selfish. Why should they end up like OINK? Facing stiff fines, Jail time, letting their friends & family down? No, i say it isn’t worth it by a l o n g shot. No place is safe anymore anyway.

I never really loved demonoid but I sure noticed it downfall. A lot of torrentfiles I downloaded came from demonoid so it was the perfect place to find anything. Hope they come back.
Deimos should ask (somehow) for financial support if that’s an issue…there are no doubt thousands of us who will respond. Just drop the dime…
demonoid was great. Despite belonging to several high level private trackers, still nothing matches demonoid.
It’ll probably come back after xmas… once things have settled down for deimos or he hands it off to someone else. I also recommend either moving to switz. with TPB, or perhaps even partnering up with TPB.

I miss Demonoid too. It was only when it went down when I realized just how many downloads used Demonoids tracker.
There are many rare vids etc that I could only find on Demonoids tracker, so it is a great loss to me. Come on Deimos, your public needs you!
I really do not understand why they would go after exactly Demonoid, when having FEW members compared to other sites. gustine’s suggestion is just great, 1$ from each member would sure bring it back online…

i still put the little demonoid.txt file in all my torrents, it just doen’t feel right without it.
I’d pay. Hell, I’d pay for a legal service that had anywhere NEAR the selection Demonoid had.
I liked it for the audiobooks, not the music or movies. And most of the books were out-of-print. Where else would you get this stuff besides filesharing?

asian hosts are not a good solution, try to open a web page in China and see how long it takes.
The backbones between europe and asia are really busy.
Korean hosts are ok, but its hard to find a place to host dedicated servs for cheap.

I got revenge on demonoid, I contacted the CRIA telling them I hope they shut down subdemon, I will get revenge on demonoid, and make sure their life IS A LIVING HELL, even if the RIAA has to send thousands of DMCA letters.
They banned me for helping them, now I don’t care if hackers put illegal porn on their forums and they get shut down and the admins account of filled with computer worms

Yea, I wish demonoid would come back too. I got in the site awhile ago and didn’t really pay much attention to it while I was a member, not really sure why. When it comes back I will be an active member for sure.
We really need to find a way to fight back against these organizations like the CIRA OR BREIN and show them that they can’t just take these sites from us the ones who support the media industry. We still are the customers on some level and all they are doing is pissing us off so we need to show that they cant do that and just expect for things to go there way.

It is not just the fact the demonoid is down it is that the copyright orgnizations where able to take down one of the most popular torrent trackers out there that really hurts us.

As far as I’m aware we still only have Deimos’ word that this is what happened. I have yet to see a scan of a threatening letter from CRIA or anything else to back up the claim that they were “forced” from Canada. CRIA can no more pull a website than can any other lobby group, and ISPs in Canada do not simply roll over when asked to, and as there is legal precident against it I’d be surprised that a provider would open themselves up to a lawsuit so wantonly. This is all a smoke-screen as far as I’m concerned.. the real story, we may get it someday, but it sure hasn’t been written on any blog I’ve seen…
Demonoid was a good example of many of the positive aspects of p2p, atleast in 2004-05 when I was envolved. There were a great many community contributors, and by that I mean people with limited bandwidth but who used to the best of their abilities; and these were the people who created the community and gave the site its importance. In watching the trail-end of the site’s decline it was sad to see Deimos piss on all the Canadian content providers and effectively ban them. These actions spoke volumes to me, and to all those moaning the loss of this site, I say reconsider your position, and go find a real community that appreciates security and respects its membership - afterall, what is a site without its members?

I’m really missing Demonoid. It was the the best semi-private site in my opinion, and the best place (next to Oink, so I’ve heard since I don’t have an invite) to get OS X software. I hope Demonoid doesn’t die, that would be a very sad day for me as well as many others.

It was news and newsworthy to me to read that Deimos has not retired or surrendered, and that if he can find a reasonably priced hosting server, he will reopen.
I got to like Demonoid a lot.
I didn’t hold it against Deimos when I got blocked as a Canadian. I just used a proxy. No one was ever actually blocked. So I don’t understand the venomous grudges some people hold.
I bet Demonoid rises from the dead, resurrects, by Easter time, which will persuade me there is a God!
As a long time member of Demonoid the thing i miss most is the community and site layout, easy to navigate and search for what you wanted. To this day no-one did it as good as Demonoid did. :/

he needs to hook up with a decent isp in canada. the country has yet to set a precedent for violating a torrent indexing site. mainly since torrents are illegal. he should find a canadian torrent admin (who’s a canadian citizen and) is willing to be the front, the responsible one, for the service.
and he should Definitely find a hosting isp which has the balls to stand up for this fully legal (torrent indexing) service.
I miss Demonoid because most of the private trackers I am a member of are specialty and I don’t like browsing totally open trackers like TPB….plus Demonoid had an amazing selection. Hopefully they will return!

If you are getting the “CRIA threatened us” message, it is a browser hijacker that the CRIA put out to stop traffic to the site. The fucked up part of this hijacker, is that it logs your IP address and automatically sends it to the CRIA as well.

The CRIA indeed forced demonoid to go down. Why and how? Not so clear, but the fact remains, hosting torrent files that are links and hashchecks to copyright infringing material is now illegal.
Yes it sucks ass, but those are the facts, anyone trying to say no Canadian group has the ability to do that is not only misinformed, they appear to be retarded.
The only way demonoid might have stayed up was if all the torrents were removed from that host. See how the forums are there? Yes, the site could still be there too, without torrents.
The only way he could have kept the site alive in Canada is to actually move the torrent files themselves to a different host, and that just adds a bunch of expenses and stress.
Torrents are dying friends, it’s too open and too public and far too easy to be caught, until the new p2p format is launched, more sites will go down, more letters will go out.

Demonoid had the best organization of any BT site I am familiar with. Demonoid had great content and as a Linux user, was a great way for me to receive updates.
