What Happened to Demonoid, Will it Ever Return?

Written by Ernesto on December 13, 2007

Ever since Demonoid decided to pull the plug following pressure from the CRIA, thousands of members are wondering what happened. Perhaps even more importantly, they are asking themselves this: Is Demonoid ever going to come back?

What Happened To Demonoid

Nobody really seems to know what the future holds for Demonoid, however, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be the most popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker, has given people a little hope.

He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

Deimos is right, it’s getting harder to find a suitable host. However, it is far from impossible since all the BitTorrent sites that were kicked out by the Dutch ISP Leaseweb found a new home within a week.

So what started the chain of events? The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

The tracker was still working for a few days, but after a while it died as well. At the moment Demonoid.com redirects to the temporary forums, which have an active community but any filesharing is strictly forbidden.

So will Demonoid ever return? Apart from the message posted by Deimos there’s not much to go on. It would be a shame to see it go down like this. Demonoid was one of the most widely used trackers and Deimos has done a lot for the BitTorrent community.

Being a BitTorrent administrator must be a very stressful experience, not to mention time-consuming. When the pressures are finally lifted for someone like Deimos, it will take all the addictive properties of BitTorrent to bring him back. Let’s hope so.

I guess time will tell.

Gee… what a waste of time writing this article. It’s basically a non-formal transcript of the Demonoid Wikipedia page! Any chance of some real news as opposed to something re-hashed and re-written using points NOT mentioned in the Wiki article?

This thread could do without the homosexual coprophiliac fantasies that several turd-brains actually picked up and re-posted, instead of ignoring or discouraging.

This site is about Torrents, not gay turd sex, you sh*theads.

103 Dec 14, 2007 at 06:29 by Ummmm, yeah... OK?!

Where exactly was the so called “hope” that Deimos apparently gave?
He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”
How is this giving people “a little hope”?! What he posted was nothing more than words explaining where the situation stood as of the end of Nov when he posted the comment.
He purely stated he has had no luck in finding a host nor does he have the money required to continue the site. Where exactly is this said ‘hope’??
As a long time member of Demonoid the thing i miss most is the community and site layout, easy to navigate and search for what you wanted. To this day no-one did it as good as Demonoid did. :/

Come back PLEASE!
You said it! Demonoid was like my second home. I miss everyone there. It was nice of Deimos to touch base with us.

My conspiracy theory: a strong and organized p2p community = a terrible threat in the eyes of RIAA/CRIA?
We really need to find a way to fight back against these organizations like the CIRA OR BREIN and show them that they can’t just take these sites from us the ones who support the media industry. We still are the customers on some level and all they are doing is pissing us off so we need to show that they cant do that and just expect for things to go there way.
The best way to fight back is to just keep downloading and keep uploading, they cant stop it, and the more we grow the more invincible we are.

Fight back! Download a bunch of stuff today! Dont wait! DOWNLOAD AND PROVE YOUR POINT! Your Community Needs You! *Wink* *Thumbs Up*

I like the new Romanian torrent sites I migrated to but still miss Demonoid. They never cared about my ratio and I could always rely on the comments being in english.

What is it with everybody who’s posted to this article??

Are yo all sex mad, sex crazed.

Talking about perspiring testicles and a desire to have sexual intercourse with Deimos is just, well it’s just weird. And what does it have to do with the topic I ask you?

Not a lot.

I understand that you’re probably letting off steam and venting your anger about Demonoids demise but using sexual references to do this will just warp your feelings.

Please I urge you to tone it down a little, pick up the bible and read a little. It will help I promise.

I have one question though, could somebody post a answer here and explain what on earth dribble $h%t is?

I agree! Demonoid seemed to have the best selection of EVERYTHING for the most part. I particularly liked the selection of Poser content, and haven’t been able to find a suitable replacement yet. I truly hope they do go back online, but I also understand the risk/finance involved is a huge burden. I do wish there was a logical alternative for something other than music & movies though. I miss the Poser community there so bad!!

Has anybody given up smoking recently? I strongly recommend it if you haven’t.

If you’re a non smoker I urge you to start and then quit. It’s well worth it.

CRIA and MPPA paid around $5,00,000 UAD to The owner of Demonoid.com in order to take the site down forever.

Site admin just want to hold their members together thats i why they started a forum.

No, demonoid will never return as they got PAID to take the website down!

My uncle is a member of MPAA and it has been confirmed.

Thanks

San

i took demonoid for granted, when ever i couldn’t find what i was looking for, it was there on demonoid with plenty of nice speedy seeders.
missing you heaps demonoid
all the best for the future

What happens if TPB looses the courtcase in sweeden? Where can the trackers go next? Venezuela? They probably have crap connections :s

We need something decentralized, where leechers still can’t download unless they upload

120 Dec 14, 2007 at 11:08 by hohowhore

Demonoid was the best because it was a real SHARING site. A lot of the uploaders wanted to share (to the members and public alike), not just to up their ratio.

Private site on the other hand are RATIO sites. Ratio is the most important thing since thats how most of them make their money. The majority are good for new/popular releases only.

I think h33t is a good replacement, but OMFG they have an ugly layout…

Yea, I wish demonoid would come back too. I got in the site awhile ago and didn’t really pay much attention to it while I was a member, not really sure why. When it comes back I will be an active member for sure.

I’d pay. Hell, I’d pay for a legal service that had anywhere NEAR the selection Demonoid had.

If it was legal of course, it WOULDN’T have “anywhere near” the same selection.

124 Dec 14, 2007 at 12:11 by It was me.

I was a Canadian user of Demonoid for a long time, and I felt abandoned when they decided it was easier to block Canadian traffic then it was to fight.

I went on the forums and told them how I felt about them turning their backs on all of Canada while using us a “safe haven”

Fuck Deimos. And Fuck Demonoid.

Was It a secret group of over 1500 people on Northern BC Canada complaining about Child Pornography on Demonoid that shut it down? I bet the CRIA will never tell.

Fuck Demonoid. They got what they deserved.

Good job padding out one quote into an entire article by rehashing everything that’s happened this year! Writer could work for computer industry trade rags with this skill level.
