What Happened to Demonoid, Will it Ever Return?

Written by Ernesto on December 13, 2007

Ever since Demonoid decided to pull the plug following pressure from the CRIA, thousands of members are wondering what happened. Perhaps even more importantly, they are asking themselves this: Is Demonoid ever going to come back?

What Happened To Demonoid

Nobody really seems to know what the future holds for Demonoid, however, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be the most popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker, has given people a little hope.

He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

Deimos is right, it’s getting harder to find a suitable host. However, it is far from impossible since all the BitTorrent sites that were kicked out by the Dutch ISP Leaseweb found a new home within a week.

So what started the chain of events? The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

The tracker was still working for a few days, but after a while it died as well. At the moment Demonoid.com redirects to the temporary forums, which have an active community but any filesharing is strictly forbidden.

So will Demonoid ever return? Apart from the message posted by Deimos there’s not much to go on. It would be a shame to see it go down like this. Demonoid was one of the most widely used trackers and Deimos has done a lot for the BitTorrent community.

Being a BitTorrent administrator must be a very stressful experience, not to mention time-consuming. When the pressures are finally lifted for someone like Deimos, it will take all the addictive properties of BitTorrent to bring him back. Let’s hope so.

I guess time will tell.

Does anyone know where Beekers(Beaker?) torrents for the Howard Stern show are? I subscribe to Sirius and encourage others to do as well but Beaker made the perfect file for my Mp3 player. the only place I found them was on the great Demonoid

Actually if you want something on the internet shut down, Children are a great way of doing it.

What people who don’t live in a Canada don’t realize is that the way our court system is set up and everything, The RCMP would rather just do away with something then actually arrest and take someone to trial.

These people who are centered around Prince George, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, etc. are in fact very real, as was there vendetta against Demonoid.

We were simply fed up the tracker being hosted in Canada and Deimos taking advantage of us.

None us us can really be sure the site went down by our doing, but people need to realize, when the police hardly know anything about file sharing in the first place, it’s easy enough to get people in an uproar about something like child pornography.

The fact is demonoid is welcome to come back, just not to Canada. I’m sure demonoid already had a heavy case against it at the time this all went down, and our claims were just a drop in the bucket. But sometimes thats how things get accomplished.

Deimos and demonoid are NOT welcome in Canada.

Demonoid IS BitTorrent.

I’m deeply saddened that Demonoid has gone.

It’s a massive loss to the net in terms of culture and freedom of speech and I feel it will be a while before something similar to Demonoid returns.

What the fuck were the CRIA thinking when they took this icon down? Did they really think they were doing some good?

From where I’m standing there’s nothing good about it at all.

Simply evil.

ok

here’s an interesting thought
if the data is decentralized

why can’t the trackers be like that as well?

do we REALLY need a website to go to for our information? why cant our searches and resulting tracker files just come from that blob of information floating around in virtualised cyberspace where all the rest of the encrypted p2p network crosses?

it has to be done in case sweden changes their laws…

Demonoid had the best organization of any BT site I am familiar with. Demonoid had great content and as a Linux user, was a great way for me to receive updates.
Mr. Jackson seems to take personal pride in implying some type of exploitation of children by Demonoid. He also openly admits to the ignorance of those making and acting upon the accusations.
One of the reasons I enjoyed Demonoid was the strict prohibition of anything remotely exploitive. In this age where Governments and world leaders use lies and innuendo to get their way, it is not surprising that ‘common’ folk would be paranoid of that which they do not understand.
In the USA, we used to burn witches too.
No matter what becomes of Demonoid, my hope is that those who ignorantly cause pain to assuage their fears would learn to live their own lives and stop fearing that which they do not understand. The bogie man is only alive if you call his name.

My idea of exploitation is being badgered by public media into paying for repulsive, inaccurate films like “Snakes on a Plane” or “Pulp Fiction”; unlike Demonoid they have NO redemptive value. (Just in case you are ‘that’ Sam Jackson.)

What an utter load of horseshit is being posted here about demonoid.
It has never been used for ‘kiddy porn’, and if it has, it had nothing to do with demonoid. Face it, if you give people power, you’re bound to find some excesses are amongst them.
LIKE DUH.

And the claims on Deimos taking bribe money, give us a fucking break. Grow up.

You think it’s so easy starting and maintaining such tracker plus website? Go right ahead and run your own. Lazy bastards.

Sorry for wasting everyones time by writing this article. I found it on Wikipedia and it was a slow news day so I felt like dragging it up again for the sake of it.
Next time I’ll try and find something more original and updated.
Regards, Ernesto.

This is exactly the sort of explicit sexual references that I am referring to. Is there any need for this really?

The desire to translate your frustration into sexual acts will not help you come to terms with the demise of Demonoid. It will merely warp your reason and leave you unprepared for the next Demonoid-esque setback, whereby you undoubtedly feel a similar desire to copulate with the administrator of that site.

I urge you re think your strategy for dealing with this tragic set of circumstances.

My heart goes out to you.

Demonoid was great!

They can never stop ‘this’; They need to learn to embrace it in a way that benefits them. It is possible…

use google.com if you have to ;)

Quite possibly Australian in origin. (appologies if its not)

Dribbling Shit, refers to a conversation where what one person is saying either makes no sense or is of little importance to anything.. (completely Irrelavant)

While talking on a first date:

Paul (dribbling shit): “..in each world obey all the usual conventional statistical laws predicted by the probabilistic Born interpretation, by showing that the Hilbert space’s inner product or norm has a special property…”

Daniela (politely):”Stop dribbling shit”

Shove your political bullshit up YOUR ass, Mr. Sam Jackson

We don’t need your tax loving Canadian asses breathing down our throats and threatening our free generations of children. For the one site you took down (Demonoid), 10 more popped up elsewhere. You cannot abolish us no matter how hard you try. We are the men with no faces, and you cannot take down what you cannot find. We’re just thankful that we are out from under the rule of one less communist hierarchy!
