What Happened to Demonoid, Will it Ever Return?

Written by Ernesto on December 13, 2007

Ever since Demonoid decided to pull the plug following pressure from the CRIA, thousands of members are wondering what happened. Perhaps even more importantly, they are asking themselves this: Is Demonoid ever going to come back?

What Happened To Demonoid

Nobody really seems to know what the future holds for Demonoid, however, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be the most popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker, has given people a little hope.

He writes: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

Deimos is right, it’s getting harder to find a suitable host. However, it is far from impossible since all the BitTorrent sites that were kicked out by the Dutch ISP Leaseweb found a new home within a week.

So what started the chain of events? The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

The tracker was still working for a few days, but after a while it died as well. At the moment Demonoid.com redirects to the temporary forums, which have an active community but any filesharing is strictly forbidden.

So will Demonoid ever return? Apart from the message posted by Deimos there’s not much to go on. It would be a shame to see it go down like this. Demonoid was one of the most widely used trackers and Deimos has done a lot for the BitTorrent community.

Being a BitTorrent administrator must be a very stressful experience, not to mention time-consuming. When the pressures are finally lifted for someone like Deimos, it will take all the addictive properties of BitTorrent to bring him back. Let’s hope so.

I guess time will tell.

The opportunity to donate to demonoid was always there - and those of us with an eye for the long term DID contribute and CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE even though the site is down.

I wonder how many of the people here calling for it’s return have ever paid anything towards it’s upkeep???

I would love to see demonoid come back, but I don’t think it will ever happen. There is nothing in it for Deimos, what does he gain by having this site online? Not a damn thing.

He has a lot to gain, if he would go private and finally take the plunge it requires to have the number one site, charge the damn free loaders (thats right we are all free loaders if we a getting something for free) like myself who would easily pay 5 or 10$ a month to have access.imagine 1 million clients at 5 bucks a month, he has a hell of a lot to gain.

no offense but your a total dumbass.
look the true basis behind bittorrent is to share - and to get free stuff… if anything else were the case then the microshit unlimited subscription plan with the zune would be more popular - and yet its not - we DONT LIKE PAYING.
volentarally donating is totally different, as is seeing a few ads.. or perhaps paying to get upload creds. but even that last is against the true nature of piracy.
piracy is what it is because we like an amazing selection avaliable anytime, anywhere, and in decent to great quality on demand. the reason ppl get busted so hard when they do get busted, and why the fines are as high as they are when they do get applied is because some bastards sell movies and music thats pirated on the street. those of us who provide this shit dont really do it for cash - and make no mistake a few hundred bucks per movie is chump fucking change; we do it for the thrill, creds, axx, and mostly because we care about the ‘group’.
those who sell or charge to access free stuff should get tossed in the slammer for a very long time.
they prove that there is money to be lost- and there is a very real amount of money actually lost when piracy of a given title happens. without money trading hands the question remains how many of those who got for free would have payed at SOME price?

i say this all the time but wtf i’ll say it again.

i will not stop pirating any time soon. i consider it my ‘right’ [yes yes - kinda but w/e] to grab anything thats been displayed in the public and archive it - if its hit tv then i could have tivo’d it etc… but i digress to the vhs wars…
i would however immediately stop pirating forever if one little thing were possible to access:
simply the sum total of all human media ever made on demand as a subscription service - 50 a month or something - usd of course lol
and untill then…. *stares at mininova*

HA, if everybody were to donate via traceable things like paypal or CC’s then it leaves a nice db for the bad guys to get their hands on, especially since demonoid used a db of IP’s to rate users, it would be lovely for the RIAA/MPAA/CRIA to courtorder that stuff then correlate it.

I do think demonoid, although often having had quality torrents and good management in suppressing fakes, was a bit of a dumb outfit, and crumbles easy under pressure.
I mean if you were taken down once already then you would be smart to prepare for another instance and have a placekeeping page on another IP ready to at least inform people, instead of running everything on one IP to be taken down and then take a long time to open a non-offensive forum and give some info.
And even if that was too costly or something, sites like torrentfreak would be happy to get a call or email with an update about what’s happening and spread that news, but instead they let people guessing for days and days, that’s nub.

Demonoid. is the best torrent site ever.

It should be helpful for millions if its back back.

194 Dec 17, 2007 at 05:19 by Why Demonoid won't be back

I have read from several sources that there is a possibility that Deimos was payed off to close the site. Obviously if this is true demonoid is history.

If demonoid returns I hope I still get my excellent ratio I held on that’s site. It would suck to start over…
