What Waffles? The Hydra Lives On
Written by Ben Jones on October 30, 2007With the demise of oink, many music aficionados were left with little in the way of similar sites. However, true to the hydra phenomenon, a week later and several new sites have sprung up to replace it. We asked the admins of two of these sites for their future plans.
Both what.cd and waffles.fm are set to continue from where oink left off, with the same rules and requirements. Each of them aiming to provide music lovers with a place to both share and discuss music.
What.cd (currently offline at time of publication) was founded the day of the OiNK takedown. “I felt sick to my stomach all morning” was how ‘What’, co-founder of what.cd described the day OiNK got raided. “We plan to grow into a large tracker - probably not as large as oink, and not as open, but eventually, I would like to support at least a hundred thousand users,” he adds
Waffles.fm on the other hand, doesn’t open for another few hours (12:01AM PST on October 31st). “In principle we’re filling a gap in the market - a lot of people just don’t get on with open / lenient trackers. In restoring that we’re also bringing back the community OiNK had, which is a big part of it,” is how waffles co-founder ‘Barney’ put his site to TorrentFreak. He is also not being as openly ambitious at first as “What” either “We’re looking at inviting perhaps 200 or less people on the opening day. We’ll gradually invite more people as things progress.”
Neither of the admins showed much enthusiasm for BOiNK, the project that is in development by the guys behind The Pirate Bay. Their main concerns were in the overall quality, and longevity of torrents on a public tracker. Somewhat ironically, however, both sites are aiming on moving to take up permanent hosting at the PRQ datacenter, as soon as upgrades there are complete. “The electricians started their work of installing another 3×200A feed yesterday” a PRQ source told TorrentFreak today.
And the reaction of the old OiNK staffers? Paine, currently the public voice of the old OiNK team, had no real comment on them, beyond hoping they both do well, and reiterating that neither is an ‘official’ replacement for OiNK.

The problem I have with these two sites is that I can’t join them even though I was an Oink Power User. They are both invite only and I don’t know how rustle up an invite. So far I see that STMusic is doing really really well the past few days plus they have welcomed us refugees with open arms. Lots of new content popping up every few minutes the way it used to happen at my pink palace.
Agreed. It doesn’t matter that we were on Oink, it only matters that we can’t get into those supposedly pro-Oink trackers now.
STMusic seems closed to registrations. Do they open it from time to time, or is it invite only?
I joined STMusic on the day of Oink’s closing. They had open reg then but not sure now. Keep trying… they are a very friendly bunch and should open reg again when they prune out the losers & posers.

Hm. How I wish I had a decent upload rate so I could upload as much as I download (though I’ve been trying insistently to get 1.1 even though I only use public trackers seeing as how pathetic my upload is and how hard it’d be to join a private tracker). These asymmetrical connections are, at best, painful for the file-sharing community and I don’t have the resources (A.K.A money) to acquire a symmetrical connection (if I’m even offered one here by my providers). I already download at a sad 52 - 55 KB/s and upload, at best, at 12 KB/s. Bah! I can’t even upload to various torrents with that transfer rate, I have to limit myself to one or two torrents (which I select according to the amount of seeds, the ones with less seeds get my tiny 2 cents of help to keep it alive for as long as I can).
It’s sad to see such a great site “die”, seems like it had earned quite a reputation in regards to quality and music distribution. It also seems sad that private trackers are the ones who earn such reputation for high quality torrents, it should be the vast majority of the torrent community that distributes high quality torrents not a selected few within a private tracker, nonetheless, it’s good to see everyone is recovering. Best of luck to the new rising trackers and all those refugees seeking a new place to call “home”.

Yes these invite situations are terrible. Although, since waffles.fm is letting former oink members email them with proof that they were on oink, that is a very good thing. And of course you stand a greater chance of getting an invitation if you do decide to email them.

STmusic is going to be the next best thing no doubt and it’s a great site they have started giving users 25 invites or more depending the level you are so i guess there is a starting block for you to get your personal friends into the community.

I agree with previous posters - it was muc easier when I could just let my oink torrent run all day. all this new BOiNK, what, waffles mumbo jumbo is so confusing. i wish there was just a fine oink replacement that I could get in, setup my torrents on, and let it go again.

Yeah too bad hosting a tracker is perfectly legal Sweden. More So, if Sweden ever changes the law so it’s not legal TPB will have plenty of warning and be able to get out before Sweden can do anything.
Actually by that time TPB may very well have their own private island…

its funny, i trusted waffles.fm from the get-go for no other reason than the design. its so easy to spot an riaa/ifpi/mediadefender website: entirely table based that wouldn’t pass xhtml validation if their lives depended on it.

I dont know where what.cd’s servers are located. I do know the admin is only 14 years old. And I dont trust that.
Waffles.fm is located in the Netherlands with plans on a dual server in Sweden.
I think Waffles.fm will be more secure.

They’ve been asked to provide screenshots of the “work in progress” elsewhere. They havent because they don’t have any.
I asked them in one blog to name three former mods at OPP. There were almost a dozen. No response, again.

For anyone who doesnt already know, Waffle invites will be sent out at the earliest on 0:00 October 31st for those who have provided proof of OiNK membership. However, I have heard that it could take anywhere from 24 - 96 hours (the original estimate I was given) to a week (what it says on the website).
waffles teaser pics are up and boy do they look awesome. Genre list is so much better than oink. now if only i could recieve an invite…

i was an OiNK member and I have about 200gb of lossless music/ Not so much but I want to share it to make this tracker better then OiNK =)
sounds to me like Waffles.fm is going to be really great….
An invite only site were people solicit and get invites from an open board! A site that asks you to send e mails identifying both the person who originally invited you and (much worse)in the wrong hands could be used to argue a legal case against OiNK on the lines that he solicited copyright breach’s. Even if waffles is a genuine site it seems to be going about things all wrong. But if they are legit best of luck.
In the meantime I and many others will continue to share elsewhere on established sites that have both welcomed ex OiNKers and are changing and adopting their rules to accommodate a newly arrived audiophile community. If you have to ask where you haven’t really being paying much attention.
Now thousands of top quality FLAC and MP3 music back and ready to go.
I just got a what.cd invite today. so far so good. i think i found my new home.

i didn’t know anybody at oink. i just looked hard and finally found a complete stranger at last.fm who helped me out with an invite. if you cant put in effort to get invited, i doubt you’d be a very good member anyways.

I hate to leave my e-mail here but I just don’t see a choice as the new sites are invite only. I was an Oink member for over three years and up’d over fifty of my own 80’s and pop rips in FLAC and V0. I also filled many user requests in these genres. I had a 1.17 ratio at the end I think. What I miss most are the comments and the forums. I learned a lot about music and making excellent rips there. This has been a rather sad six months for private trackers so now I’m in the same boat as everyone else. Didn’t have anything new to ad at oink, but hell, now I’ve got a solid 180 gigs that would be fresh somewhere new. Always maintained ratio of >2. Anything at all would be appreciated

this is all anyone is going to do now is come to public boards begging for invites from people they don’t even know lol so if people are sending invites out to people they dont know then what is the point of it being invite only it’s stupid.
you all didn’t want boink to flurish but at least with something public it means you can get your files and share your files,

Personally I’d rather have the option of using one that actually allowed the Real EX users to join without jumping through hoops pointless hoping everything goes private invite only then finding out you’ll never get into them and your then the one left out in the dark.

Yet another ex-oinker here. Here’s something I’m wondering. How many of you really cared about the pre-release stuff?
Personally, I got it if it was something I was interested in, but the reason I loved Oink was the quality and breadth of what they had. I filled some requests, too, which was fun. Building that community took years. It won’t just come back in a couple of days.

1) The quicker you hand out your invites, the quicker we multiply the sites
2) There are people out there who say “i have one what.cd for a waffle invite.” 99% of those people don’t even have the invite. They’re just trying to sucker someone into giving them one.
3) If you’re not a lying sack of shit and actually have one of those invites, revert back to rule #1.

i was a member of oink for awhile and am looking to find a new home.
Hey everyone. I’ve been lurking for a long time and never posted, until now. This scramble for invites does leave a lot of us with a dilemma. I, too, was a long-time power user of OiNK (lucked out and enrolled when the site was very young and had open sign-up). I had a ratio of somewhere around 15, with over a terabyte uploaded. I was content (as I have been on this board) to lurk in the background, not uploading much.. but seeding until the cows came home. I looked at that at my way to give back to the site I loved so much. But in so doing, other than filling the odd request, I didn’t have much personal interaction with individual users… and now that it’s gone, I’m sort of at a loss as to how to get an invite because I don’t know anyone who’s riding on any of the new heads of the hydra.
I’m a full-time employee at a big company, plus I travel a lot, so I can’t be available all the time to jump on a site when enrollment is opened up. So I guess I’m asking… what am I, and people like me, supposed to do now?

Jesus, people, don’t be such slobs! If you want the invites work for them - go to irc channels, contact your old friends from Oink (you know, the ones that invited you or that you invited!), don’t just expect things to fall into your lap! It’s very easy to get an invite to either of those sites at this point, but you WILL have to show you are willing to put a little effort into it, ex-Oinkers or not.

They are ddos’ed, but no clue by who atm. It seems like there is some totally irrational (you can say stupid) fight between trackers being introduced. Maybe MD sent their ppl into tracker’s forums to instigate such a thing.
