What Waffles? The Hydra Lives On

Written by Ben Jones on October 30, 2007

With the demise of oink, many music aficionados were left with little in the way of similar sites. However, true to the hydra phenomenon, a week later and several new sites have sprung up to replace it. We asked the admins of two of these sites for their future plans.

What Waffles? The Hydra Lives OnBoth what.cd and waffles.fm are set to continue from where oink left off, with the same rules and requirements. Each of them aiming to provide music lovers with a place to both share and discuss music.

What.cd (currently offline at time of publication) was founded the day of the OiNK takedown. “I felt sick to my stomach all morning” was how ‘What’, co-founder of what.cd described the day OiNK got raided. “We plan to grow into a large tracker - probably not as large as oink, and not as open, but eventually, I would like to support at least a hundred thousand users,” he adds

Waffles.fm on the other hand, doesn’t open for another few hours (12:01AM PST on October 31st). “In principle we’re filling a gap in the market - a lot of people just don’t get on with open / lenient trackers. In restoring that we’re also bringing back the community OiNK had, which is a big part of it,” is how waffles co-founder ‘Barney’ put his site to TorrentFreak. He is also not being as openly ambitious at first as “What” either “We’re looking at inviting perhaps 200 or less people on the opening day. We’ll gradually invite more people as things progress.”

Neither of the admins showed much enthusiasm for BOiNK, the project that is in development by the guys behind The Pirate Bay. Their main concerns were in the overall quality, and longevity of torrents on a public tracker. Somewhat ironically, however, both sites are aiming on moving to take up permanent hosting at the PRQ datacenter, as soon as upgrades there are complete. “The electricians started their work of installing another 3×200A feed yesterday” a PRQ source told TorrentFreak today.

And the reaction of the old OiNK staffers? Paine, currently the public voice of the old OiNK team, had no real comment on them, beyond hoping they both do well, and reiterating that neither is an ‘official’ replacement for OiNK.

Where would I send an email proving that I was an OiNK member in order to get a waffles.fm invite?

smooth move posting these urls, ben jones

really helping out the community. keep up the good work

34 Oct 31, 2007 at 00:21 by rantguy

look guys, you really can’t be inviting people you don’t *personally* know to these sites. if i happen to find a good tracker i’m not going to risk inviting a random person who could work for the RIAA or something. moreover, i don’t want to belong to a community where ANYONE in it invites random people. so please stop fishing for invites and throwing out email addresses.

35 Oct 31, 2007 at 00:32 by WTEff is going on?

Am I honestly supposed to trust that Waffles.fm e-mail thing? Who else sent them their confirmation codes? Thankfully I have mine, but I think I’ll wait ’till I hear more news to send it in.

(and is for sure that if I do send it, they’ll let be a member? Whats with that 200 people thing?)

The RIAA are already on every music tracker there is fool.

37 Oct 31, 2007 at 00:38 by what's going on?

I tried like 20 times to sign up on what.cd ( http://incegmbh.com/ ) but it kept saying my confirmation code was wrong. I seriusly tried all possible thing on like 10 different codes, then i guess on finally worked and it told me I didn’t have an invite. I also didn’t get an e-mail. Whats going on?

Should I go with http://incegmbh.com/ or waffles?

I agree with previous posters - it was muc easier when I could just let my oink torrent run all day. all this new BOiNK, what, waffles mumbo jumbo is so confusing. i wish there was just a fine oink replacement that I could get in, setup my torrents on, and let it go again.

which leads me to my next point: someone invite me to waffles when it opens. :p

I’m sorry but I had to laugh at this comment. You do realize that What.cd, Waffles.fm, AND The Pirate Bay are all hosting at a single datacenter in Sweden? You know, PRQ? It’s god damn ridiculous. This is no hydra. If the authorities ever find a way to take down The Pirate Bay, it’ll be cake to take down these two OiNK successors too. Can you imagine the headlines? why did what.cd change their address? earlier today is was “what.cd” not it is ‘incegmbh.com”

what is the reason for that??

48 Oct 31, 2007 at 01:16 by Heh

People; stop asking for invites. You aren’t going to get any. If you’ve been part of Oink.cd before, simply email waffles@beau.ws an old torrent from Oink.cd and chances are they’ll let you in.

http://waffles.fm/faq.php check that page out on how to join oink.cd

Yeah too bad hosting a tracker is perfectly legal Sweden. More So, if Sweden ever changes the law so it’s not legal TPB will have plenty of warning and be able to get out before Sweden can do anything.

Actually by that time TPB may very well have their own private island…
