This is a nice article, but the biggest flaw that everyone is missing is that the postal service is owned by the government. You purchase your internet service from a private company that has to abide by the regulations of the FCC (another retarded branch of govt). Because we're working off of networks owned by large corporations, they have the right to enforce their own rules and regulations in addition to the ones already mandatory from the FCC. Comcast, AT&T or whatever huge company you purchase your internet from isn't going to try to protect the privacy of its users when faced with a government mandate or even just a big lawsuit.

So unless we want to have government owned internet service, where in court, we could easily fight with this argument, there needs to be a little more thinking and research done on those communication laws.

Indeed the Customs should be considered. But then again, mails with viruses could be considered parcels with bombs (or anthrax if you will). So the ISPs/Governments would be responsible for preventing this from getting to the destination? Poses a rather complicated issue. How can you determine which was the origin of the mail?

If the internet has one single difference from reality is that it has no boundaries. In this sense, the Customs argument might not be correct but I wouldn't know.

You missed the point. MAFIAA wants copies to be considered theft and regular criminal procedures applied online but they don't want basic freedom principles. Can you see how he points the double-edged sword here? I figured you couldn't.

Oh but you can kill some1 using the internet. Spread false information, advocate hatred against that person etc. If your tactic sticks then that person might be threatened in reality.

Point is, the rules apply online yes. But they shouldn't be abused.

My DVD player upscales for my HDTV full resolution. Eyecandy in my opinion.

Blu-ray looks better than the upscale yes but not to the point I'll rush and buy only blu-rays. And there's some huge downside: they keep changing decryption keys with firmware updates which is plain annoying. So if I really want blu-ray quality I'll just buy the DVD for the heck of it download the blu-ray format. Can't get the blu-ray? Couldn't care less.

@Rick: don't bother, he's a troll. Yet you just pwned him.

@pigfarmer and @whatever:
I wonder what would happen if I sent a DVD-R full of personal videos and pictures to my godmother in the US. Considering they opened my letter to check, would they go far enough to put the media on a computer and read the contents? If this happens then we are living evil times.

In any case, when you make physical copies of copyrighted works so your friend/grandma/cousin/colleague/unknown friend of friend/whoever gets the chance to check then you are engaging in an unlawful activity. So yes, for wanting to share the thing with my friends while being clingy to the original me and my friend are now criminals to the eyes of the MAFIAA. What's the difference between this and doing it online? None.

This article is very good in pointing how the copyright laws need reforming and how the anti-piracy morons know this will be addressed sooner or later and are aiming at the very freedom that's mentioned on the article to prevent the power of monopoly from escaping their hands.

sherboil missed the point as always. And Rick has done yet another awesome work.
