Because the people we are stealing from have fucked us over for years and now its our turn.
Here is a summary:

Hollywood: Cost of making a blockbuster movie has dropped since their heyday in the 90s. NOT taking inflation into account. Think Waterworld, Titanic, Terminator 2. These are all into the hundreds of millions of dollars to make. And they made a profit at lower price points for cinema tickets, DVD, merchandise etc.
Movies simply don't cost as much to make any more yet ticket prices have doubled in ten years. DVD/Blu-Ray are stupidly priced compared to their VHS predecessors and this is justified by "Bonus Features". Not a bonus if you have to pay for them. And then you must account for having to upgrade your home cinema hardware every few years now. First HDTV, now 3D (pointless waste of time).
Throw in the fact that movies are getting duller and duller (except for the cheaper ones as a rule) and the public is not getting value for money.
The old argument about piracy costing so much is finally a little more valid than it used to be because Hollywood has finally made an effort to synchronise worldwide release of its films. Making the rest of the world wait 6 months like they used to was a big reason people pirated films.

TV: Too many, irritating adverts. Why does Sky 2 keep reminding me that Mum's go to Iceland during a Stargate Atlantis marathon? Its stupid. Again, same issue with after sales but worst of all they haven't updated their metrics in years so a show that I love and have invested in can get cancelled at any moment. Even a profitable one. So why spend a fortune in cash to watch a show that might never be properly finished off. You wouldn't buy a book with no ending. Sort it out.

CDs are the simplest of all. Discs and concert tickets are massively overpriced. And despite getting the smallest fraction of the profits, musicians still get very rich. Which means some usually schmuck in a suit is getting ultra-rich for doing sweet FA. Why should I support that?

Downloads are priced too close to physical purchases across all media. Why am I covering disc manufacturing and copying costs, sleeve printing costs etc when I download a file? Because the producer has got used to charging a certain amount and now overvalues his content. A plastic disc costs less to make than a VHS or Cassette tape. A download costs much less again. These savings have never been passed on and thats why people steal media.

You are only really stealing if you would have paid for it otherwise. most of this stuff I wouldn't even watch if it weren't free.

You have to consider piracy a crime to make it socially unacceptable. Since I do not, i think what i do is fine ... I record a song , movie and or book and make no profit from same .. I even freely advertise these products to friends who buy same... I will NEVER consider it a crime to simply put a song or movie on disc and play it in the privacy of my own home when the cost to buy such product is WAY overpriced . Canada has it right

"Is there any other crime people are so completely and disarmingly blasé about committing?"

Good question. I don't know. Take a look at what world leaders do. American senators, corporate CEOs, rich world bankers. I am sure they are just the salt of the earth and have done no harm.

Look at it this way. If I have an arm cut off, and I also have a splinter in my finger. Both are unpleasant, but should I take out the splinter first, or take care of my severed arm that is gushing blood?

This guy doesn't know that undergraduates were born with Internet, napster and all this free to download music. Just google and click download that's easy. Only maybe spotify is easier but then u have to pay to store them offline. Then let's not forget u can listen all u want on YouTube, so it's not that difficult for people to rip the videos into mp3s. Is like recording the radio into cassettes. It's so easy its not like hacking into the Sony music servers and stealing an mp3. Why buy when it's so much easier to get stuff for free.
