If I recall correctly Amazon was threathend to be sued for his TTS software in Kindle 2. Copyright industry claimed that it is making audio book without paying extra fees. This is not the case of parent reading to its child but somehow claiming that TTS softwre that produces generally computerized voice that cannot even remote be close to a professional actor reading a book is, for me at least, one of the extremes of the absurdity of the current law. Granted that this case refers to US. From my country, which is Poland, we have extra provision in copyright law that grants people the non-revokable license to use any distributed copyright material for ones own personall use as well (an this is important) allows us to use any distributed copyright material to the members of the family and closest friends. So in my country I can rip a DVD I bought to my hard drive (either for backup copy or because I feel it is more convenient for me than juggle many cds and dvds) but in UK there is no such exemption and if I want to listen to a song on my mp3 player I need to purchase mp3 file although I have already cd and a computer at home.

Not a bit. We use classic tales because they are public domain. If we wish to adapt a work not in the public domain, we would license it. For instance, I once cut a cover version of "Knocking On Heaven's Door". I cut a check for around $40 to Dwarf Music and used it by permission. $40 shouldn't make much of a difference to anybody.

Uh huh.
So, tell me, did your company "play in a book" pay the Shakespeare estate for its use of MacBeth?
Or how about the licensee for the 3 billy goats gruff? Or Hansel and Gretel?

Oh, Mr Marlon St John, you're just taking without paying, so "no different than shoplifting"? No, I didn't think you would see it that way.

Is it ok to share someone else's creative work when you get to repackage it and sell it at 10c/page on amazon?
Or have you noticed that there's a significant usage of taking and re-purposing work that's being stifled by an over-reaching and over-encroaching copyright system?

Of course, you have an 'untrained eye', but to castigate people for wanting 'free shit' while at that same time running a commercial business that basically thrives on 'free shit' is a bit hypocritical, isn't it?

Marlon, do yourself a favour and quit while you're, well not ahead, but not as losing badly as say bobmail.
Do you remember what they included in that? It was machines, and maps, and only those created in the US.

It's not about you making a living, it's not about you deciding who gets to do what ,it's about keeping it free for society to develop and grow. And there's NOTHING about copyright there. Or Patents either. However, both are topics that Congress has as an enumerated power, in some form or other.

actually, "the ability to control copyright" is not in the Constituion. What is there is that Congress can enact copyright laws to 'promote he progress of science and the useful arts'.
The aim is progress, not you making a living. In fact, the focus is squarely AWAY from any kind of personal freedom and FOR a societal one.
