This story, with which I was not familiar, seems to prove the point I made originally – which is that creators are hamstrung by their contract relations with big capital, and, of course, by copyright law. I was watching Moby on TV recently, and he confirmed that most artists feel very constrained in what they say about the file-sharing phenomenon because they are afraid of what their label would do to them. So much for the “nonsense” poster.

Metallica got their record contract playing a demo tape of Dave Mustaine playing guitar and singing songs he wrote the music and lyrics for. It should be noted that Dave Mustaine had already been kicked out of the band by then.

Then, what really broke it open was YouTube that allowed people to easily post the songs from other unsigned bands that Metallica very obviously stole for their first several albums.

Megadeth, Diamond Head, Exodus and many other bands were ripped off by Metallica.

Actually, Iron Maiden did put low quality copies of most of their own songs on their own web site back in the 90s because the radio wouldn’t play their music and Walmart, the largest CD retailer by far at the time, wouldn’t sell it.

They did get in a fight with their music publisher over it and it’s one of the things they split over.

They actually had a bootleg trading section on their forum, the official albums/eps/singles were not allowed but when someone posted those they would just say to not do it there ’cause it was a bit abusive to do that in front of them, And people would do in private without being banned or anything.

I can’t tell if you meant that for me Cosmo or Trot but if it is meant for me then explain where you make the leap from the little I have said to “we need government” I don’t see it. There has always been capitalism though from the dawn of time.

I agree with your second statement but I strongly disagree with the first.
You seem to suggest that humanity *needs* government. Why would it – because government told you so? 300 years ago people believed that monarchy was gods will and the world would end if there were no king. 2000 years ago they believed the emperor actually was a god. How else could he force them to build pyramids?

We don’t need capitalism. We don’t need rulers. And we certainly dont need the entertainment industry.

That is how I became. I rarely listen to their older music now. I don’t listen to their newer stuff and I refuse to go to any of their concerts or buy any of their products.
