What needs to happen, even though I have a hard time believing it will happen, is to raise awareness among the “regular folks”. The US Six Strike program is an excellent opportunity stateside. You saw what ACTA did in the EU.

People indeed need to be re-educated on copyright, but not like the RIAA & MPAA intend to do. What people need to learn (many for the first time) is that which gets *published* thus becomes *public* and as a matter of course becomes public property. It’s only by imposed rules that there is a “limited time” where there is an artifical monopoly on certain works.

How many people first heard about SOPA/PIPA when their Wikipedia suddenly turned black… and were totally clueless before that time? How many people know that copyright on books, recordings, movies, etc. at some point expires and then you are free to do with the work whatever you like?

Wonder why it is that people do not know this. Wonder how that could be changed. The reason MPAA/RIAA were so mad about Wikipedia et al. informing the people about SOPA/PIPA is that normally they are in control about what gets disseminated, and how. There was suddenly a MainStreamMedia-sideband channel. A rogue channel. A channel that didn’t play ball.

How can we create a channel to provide information to the masses? That is going to be a bigger problem than WIPO-observer membership.
