It’s an awesome, non-profit, public tracker. They have 18 million+ peers using it, so it’s quite popular. TPB has it set as one of it’s default trackers.

The DHT enabled torrent isn’t giving me any issues. Unless you’re using very old torrent clients that doesn’t support DHT, you shouldn’t notice any speed decrease once things gets going.

no, it’s onyl ever because of the ‘private’ flag. They used to be called ‘registration’, ‘community’ or ‘closed’ trackers before the flag was around, but when the private flag was developed in 05, they jumped on the name for marketing reasons.
today, the more accurate name is ‘activity logging’ trackers, because that’s what they do.

Private sites are “private” because they require registration. It has nothing to do with the private flag and never has.

@freonpsandoz, you have a good point. Any trackerless torrent could be re-tracked automatically by its Bittorent client to any working public tracker.as long as the other Bittorrent clients do the same, i.e. converge to the new working tracker. On the other hand, are the remaining online trackers willing or able to take on the load transfered from the down trackers? This might be the only key issue to settle regarding your proposal.

I think the traffic has shifted to them and overloaded them because many torrents include several public trackers. For example, istole.it is frequently timing out, but works eventually.

Removing duplicate tracker entries for all torrents is ANOTHER thing that the torrent clients should handle automatically as part of updating trackers. If uTorrent and others won’t step up and add automatic tracker updating, maybe someone should create a standalone app that does it.

I have read a little about how trackers work and I don’t understand why what I propose can’t or shouldn’t be done. A user can add a list of trackers to each torrent manually with a torrent client and the modified list persists in the resume.dat file. However, this is of no use unless other users add the same trackers to the same torrents. Perhaps you can explain in more detail why torrent clients don’t do the same thing automatically for all torrents that are not marked ‘private.’

Read how trackers work, then you’ll understand why this isn’t done by the torrent applications.
DHT is UDP based, requires no connections at all.
