It doesn't really matter if it was fair use or not: The same thing would have happened. Universal wouldn't accept the counter-claim even if it was fair use, because it is not in their interest to do so.

Of course they have a deal. If they did not have a deal, there could be no content from Universal on YouTube at all.

The article however claims they have a *special* deal *specifically* with Universal, with *special benefits for Universal that other companies does not have*.

This is incorrect. It's the same deal, the same process and the same benefits that *all* the companies have.

And no, content is not reinstated if not challenged in court. It's reinstated if your counter-claim is accepted. But Universal has no interest in accepting the counter-claim, so they don't.

*Then* you have to go to court. And you'll lose, because Universal has expensive lawyers and you do not.

Right, that's all there is too it. Unfortunately, the system is set up so that the one who decides if Universal owns the copyright is Universal. The next step (for good reasons) is a court. The problem with *that* is that even if you win, it will cost you insane amounts of money.

I'm sorry, I was unclear. It's not that they "ignore" them per se. What happens is that they deny them. As you say, all they have to do is to accept them. But they don't, because it is not in their interest to do so.

"Who's paying you to misinform people about copyright law?"

Who is paying you to be an ignorant twit?

Unfortunately, this is not how it works. Google does not review the counter-claim. Universal does. And they will just click "No". There is no question of "valid proof", valid proof is only relevant in courts. Google is not a court, and does not and should not have the ability to play judge and jury in these cases.

Youtube is a private company. They can choose what goes on their site or not.

However this is a capitalist, competitive world. If Youtube will not respect its users, there are many alternatives. Users must punish Youtube for its capitulation.
