I can confirm this. The other day, I was looking for the intro to Daria, an old, ended show. I found one in embarassingly low quality, one edited down, and finally one that was acceptable quality (VHS and DVD rips, whatchayagonnado) but was flipped horizontally. I thought this was weird, so I uploaded a copy of the intro myself. It was taken down within 10 minutes.

Interscope had it removed without having the copyright.
Interscope went to “Boy Better Known” to buy it.
Interscope is now recording it again with Eminem.

We can’t have good music out there belonging to small artists now can we.

Actually the ethical rights apply and are not transferable so the artist could decide that he doesn’t want his song to be published anymore (even he doesn’t have the copyright) and just leave the “leaked” videos go viral (that is if torrent freak still wrote about it. :-D). Of course that would cost him to compensate for the company that owned the copyright but I guess it wouldn’t be that much since as far as I know you only have to compensate for actual costs and not for possible future profits.
