As somebody who PERSONALLY KNOWS the man who owns the theatre, this is disgusting. This place has been on the verge of closing down for years, barely staying afloat with locally loved and incredibly cheap to attend events like the Rocky Horror Picture Show and some amazing classic music acts like B.B. King. I fucking hate the plutocracy we live in.

As someone who has lived in Grants Pass for most of my life, I can tell you that this lawsuit will most likely bankrupt the town. YES, Fox has a right to be upset, because there’s really only one person in charge of the Rogue Theatre and he seems to have purposefully neglected to pay the necessary royalties, but $150,000? I don’t think that’s necessary.

The biggest trouble with US copyright now is that they overstretched it to the point where people have to resort to breaking the law if they can’t afford to pay for their entertainment.

What’s needed is a modification so that material over 25 years falls under Creative Commons, which would allow people to share it without profiting from it. Only the copyright holder could profit from it.

I’m sure it was a mistake somewhere. The theater had the film and thought it had the rights to air it. But it looks pretty bad to go after a small non-profit theater over the rights to a 40 year old film.

I happen to live near this town, am in the entertainment industry, and have worked with guy who runs the theater. He is a complete douche and deserves whatever he has coming to him. The copyright law may be a bit extensive, but karma is a bitch!

Fox renewed the copyright in 2003,according to the Bluray. There’s no way anyone can spell the name of the organization that first held it in 1975.

And how much money does get paid to the actors and creative types after the studios have had their accountants apply Hollywood accounting to the accounts to get away with paying as less as possible to anyone.
