true, the only movies I’ve ever downloaded are far too old to be seen in most theaters. (although that may be due in part to the lack of quality content in recent films…… in all entertainment industries/genres in fact).

no, movie theaters do well because they have a GIANT AZZ screen and great speakers, something most people either cant afford or don’t have the room for in their homes (if this isn’t the case then why haven’t tapes/dvds/blue rays/internet killed theaters yet?). theaters could be places of public performance, and even help promote local artists, as the entertainment industrial complex would (and should) collapse without copyright monopolies. That doesn’t mean movies and other forms of entertainment wouldn’t exist, it just means they might be smaller scale/budget, and maybe have less explosions/sfx and more content/better writing/more depth.

This seems right. When you look at even the popular films the number of file sharers is a few % compared to the sales and file sharers still spend as much money as they can afford to.

Every generation of consoles since NES has gotten bigger actually. More money spent on games than films these days. Pretty much everyone is a gamer these days even old people.

This is important. So far many paying options are worse than the free options. 3.99 to stream a film that I can rent on disc for $2 or less? The stream is cheaper for the company and is lower quality for the consumer and usually more restricted in playback. TV episodes that come out days or weeks later than the free option… Music downloads are doing well and they are the closest in value to the free options. Take a hint other media.

Filesharing costs money, effort and time. Filesharers aren’t making money they are spending it and they tend to spend more of it on media than non-fileharers.

You cannot have communism, a priori, without the social provision of basic goods and services essential to life and to what I call “human dignity”. At the same time, you cannot have communism if monopolies exist on basic virtual goods either. There will be a tendency as the world moves to socialism to “protect” private profit in some areas, such as private copyrights for creative output in music, art, entertainment, and so forth. While some provisions can be made to reward creativity (the creative, and the creators) which enhances socialist life, private profit from it – in the sense we understand it today – cannot co-exist with socialism. Then artists can return to making art for art’s sake, and programmers for the joy of creating good systems, whatever their purpose. This is a freedom that the world lacks at present, but which we see emerging in the open source movement, and we may see more and more creative artists producing art for the ages when they no longer have to answer calls from “the recording industry” or the “art broker”.
