Alec, I agree with your side of the argument, however this particular idea of using spyware and malware is akin to that of the revengeful and spiteful shariah law in Middle eastern countries i.e “an eye for an eye”. What’s the difference between these tactics and cutting off someone’s hand because they steal? Why should corporations get to decide on legal punishment options?
If laws like this pass for the content industry, can you imagine the laws other multi-national companies in other industries could pass for similar infringements of their products?

The problem with the content industry is it does not see past it’s own mission and look at how particular legislation that is applied in one case in court is then taken advantage of by other cases and people who are using this practice in a very malicious way.

Like SOPA and PIPA, with regards to the content industry some parts of it made sense, but again, legislation like that could and most probably would be misused in other completely different scenarios to prove a point in court and in extreme crimes. That’s why people were against it.
