It PISSES all over IMAx 3D and RealD enabled cinemas. I also hear XpanD which uses shutter glasses is good but it’s not available in the UK I don’t think.

I have seen all three 3D systems and Dolby 3D is BY FAR the best of the three passive lens systems.

IMAX 3D uses old linear polarizing lesnes = ghosting when you tilt you head, dark glasses dim the screen. If they compensate by turning up the brightness the colors become washed out. Also tracking motion is VERY hard on the eyes/brain.

RealD uses circular polarizing lenses = No head tilt ghosting problems. However it still suffers from dimming because the lenses are dark.

Dolby 3D whilst not perfect is MUCH better and clearer. No head tilt issues. No ghosting. Easier to track motion (For me anyhow) and uses glasses that are not darkened. They are shiny but clear and use interference patterns or something to make them work. It was AMAZING!

As to ‘pirating’ 3D movies. Well you can already downloade BluRay rips that use the old colored lens system but that system is shit!

BluRay 3D proper has been finalized for HDTV’s for next year. You will not need a new BluRay player but you will need a new 3D capable HDTV. When those discs appear it won’t be long before they are uploaded onto the internet.

It isn’t hard to simply put a polarized lense over a cam, getting a capture for a single eye. With the boom in shutterglasses sales I see coming in a couple months, it will be even less of a big deal.
