The bullshit thing is you have to pay a licence to even watch non-BBC channels. The other channels get almost none of this fee (I think they get some token payout for providing local news services).

This is the current situation. The BBC have been campaigning for years to change this so you need a licence for on-demand services too.

This is such a shame. I hadn’t watched Doctor Who and wanted to see the new series before the Capaldi series began. So I went to the DVD store (because they’re still around in Australia due to our dodgy internet) and rented what I could. But they just didn’t have some of the episodes. That site complimented my legal purchases so I could get on board the franchise and take part of the show. The sooner companies realise that these sites work in favour of the show and not against their profit margins the better.

On the topic of TV licenses, people out side of the UK cannot imagine how brutally (though toothless) they try to enforce it. They contact nearly every household in the UK, demanding you pay them for your TV license, without any information on if you actually use a TV to watch anything sent to it (Freeview, Sky, Virgin; if its from a TV station they want a cut, so you can’t not pay and go without BBC’s channels).

I’ve not watched TV at home for years, but every property I’ve been in (much more common in student areas though) the TV licenses firms have hounded me with dozens of repeating demands and threats.

I’ve had the ‘We’ve assembled information about you and are just getting ready for a court date one’ a couple times, but if you don’t reply they send you out the first letter in the chain ‘We suspect you of watching TV without a license’. Its a joke, as large as the copyright cartels (in the UK)!
