For people arguing that this is stupid. If you provide detailed instructions on how to do something, and tell people they can do it, and use something like Copyright materials to do it. If they then go out and download copyright materials then yes they are liable. The same goes for if you stand in front of a group of people and say "X should be killed with a shotgun blast to the chest!" If someone goes out and kills X after hearing you, you are liable because your words incited someone to do it. If you sell a gun to someone and show them how to use it and say to them "With this, you can rob a bank." And they go and rob a bank. You are Liable for their actions because you incited them.

They actually have a good case against CNET and CBS because they made reviews showing people how to pirate software, they handed them the tools to do it as well via the download. They provided the people everything they needed for them to feel it was okay to do these things because they had a position of trust. If people then went out and pirated. People, who before that review or tutorial would not have pirated, then yes CNET and CBS are in fact liable for the actions of those people.

A doctor says that drinking the blood of virgins is healthy for you and that it'll provide you with the cure to cancer. The -AVERAGE- person will believe them. Why? Because the Doctor is in a position of trust, he obviously knows what he's talking about because he has the med school degree. This falls under the same category of position of trust. CNET is widely known as a reliable source of information. If they say it's okay to look up and download these copyright songs on the net, then the average person will believe that it is in fact alright to download them if they're on there.

So the case is not unreasonable, CNET and CBS put themselves in this position.

Without actually being Trent, but being familiar with his works and views, I'd suspect he'd be in favour of it. It's believed that the high quality TPB uploads of his work (including the Broken video) were uploaded by Reznor himself, as were the usb drives left in the bathrooms at his concerts containing previously unreleased studio-quality work.

To say nothing of the fact that the guy would <i>"rather die than give you control"</i>

Nope.

These people have always been there.

It's just that in more civilized times, road rails, tar and feathers were more easily accessible and the would-be troll was usually located somewhere in the town he gave offense to people in.

<i>"Can you site a specific example that would put them in trouble? Remember, movies are fantasies, not reality."</i>

Really? So a movie showing someone how to use a filesharing client is fantasy, not reality?

Thank you.

The one where you are assuming CBS and CNET do not have the express sanction of the artist in question to use his work in a demonstration.

Care to Ask Reznor about that?

Then go read your own argument as a defense on Alki's lawsuit against CBS and CNET.

It's not our fault if your reading comprehension skills don't pass the bar for fact-checking what you yourself wrote actually means.
