"We purposefully came up with a part for our latest product that will not accept parts from other manufacturers. Fred Bloggs printed out a converter and will destroy our business model!!"

I'm not surprised at all that the article has been buried. Typically, the BBC is known as a fairly left-wing and liberal organisation (and any readers in the US, please note that liberal means something different over here). The BBC News website, on the other hand, appears to be composed of 100% triple-reinforced concrete Hitler - I've no idea why, though.

On the few occasions I saw before giving up on the site, when they asked readers to "Have Your Say" on piracy-related topics, any user-comments left on site that appeared to condone piracy (or even suggest a compromise) were censored completely out of existence by the moderators. I couldn't tell you exactly why - the only explanation ever given for moderation is that a given comment "breaks the house rules". The last time I saw them ask the question, they gave up and simply cancelled the entire topic and all comments after about half an hour. I haven't bothered to go back to the site since then.

Perhaps, one day, they'll put someone in charge with a bit of common sense.

The end quote on this "excellent article" is, in addition to the other points he addresses with reason and good sense, a message that businesses and politicians worldwide (but specially those in the USA) should see and accept as true -
<blockquote>"If your business plan counts on copying going down it's the wrong business plan. It just won't work.

"What you'll do instead is finding yourself locked in an arms race with the people who you're hoping to sell things to."</blockquote>

Politicians MUST get the law of copyright amended and updated to reflect fairly and properly the changes in technology called "the internet". Fascist policies to restrict freedom of speech or to share files for non-commercial purposes simply aint gonna work other than to keep misery levels at an otherwise avoidable high.

Well said Cory D. and thanks to TF for this important heads-up.

It's a decent article. Shame that it's tucked away where no one will see it.
I can't even find a single link to the article on the BBC website. There was one link yesterday on the business page , but now it's gone... the only reminance is on the BBC sitemap.

True comment... “Computers Are Never Going to get Worse at Copying Things”

Once something is a number it can be reproduced infinitly with zero degradation.
Thats all Digital information is....... a number.(usually + millions of digits long)

What Cory Doctorow says about , having a good business model makes sharing irrelevent , is also sensible.( i'm paraphrasing )
As I stated before : ........ Applies for all the media industries....

Basiclly the product is good.... it sells.
The business model is good....it makes profit.

iF....it doesn't make profit.... the business model is fuked.
iF.....it doesn't sell... the product is fuk-shit.

eg....
Spending 1 million dollars to make a book TODAY.....
is a bad business model.... Doesn't matter how good the product is.

The industries keep clinging to the past business models, that work... ... ..... well they worked.... in the past.

Evolve a new business model or die ! .. Because....... . . .
