The language is C# on Mono/Debian/Ubuntu for the back-end, MySQL for the database, and AJAX/jQuery for the frontend with C#/Asp.Net to construct the pages initially. As long as you have expertise anywhere there, any help is more than welcome. (If you don’t know C#, it’s pretty much identical to Java.)

My idea wasn’t as revolutionary as others I’ve seen shot down by the copyright monopoly, but still, it was a contribution I wasn’t allowed to make unless I paid about 800k in licensing fees to various rightsholders (not even the original creators, just people who bought some software and some patents and are sitting on them). Hell, we even managed to get a couple of workarounds from the original creator of one of the things we wanted to use, but in the end we were threatened with endless lawsuits that we would’ve been unable to handle (let alone do anything useful with our idea).

Not in the “they weren’t really motivated like that” sense of wrong that makes for juicy articles for college professors, but in the straight up “that’s not the date on the top of the document” kind of way.

What’s going on with the law is certainly up for debate. It is likely just what anyone on here would guess: industry capture on an increasingly-international scale, and it needs to be questioned and we should be weighing the value of what we are doing rather than just assuming that more copyright means more art.

The real difficulty with so many aspects of the law getting enshrined in international agreements is that while domestic legislation is slow, international trade negotiations are CRAZY slow, insanely expensive, and changes sometimes require unanimous approval. “Complain to your government and they will send an official to the next round of negotiations and after thirty years that change may be reflected in the agreement” is not exactly a great model for democratic accountability.
