TL;DR
GNU e-peen waving and FSF evangelism differ in that one is based on a twenty-year old grudge match.

The fact of the matter is, most operating systems are no where near as
GNU dependent as you think. Linux-based operating system is far more
accurate than GNU/Linux or GNU+Linux, and has been for ages (in internet
time.)

GNU tools are, as GNU's acronym should make people realize, not standard Unix-like tools. And by far the most popular Unix-like tools out there were written by one *BSD contributor or another. GNU, because of the BSD license requirements, is completely free to adopt these- commonly accepted as- better implementations. They have refused because GNU vs. BSD is a massive display of e-peen waving.

I dunno, I've seen all the bad press about it but I haven't had one fail on me yet. I have a "server" running off of an old 2gb thumb drive from back when 2gb was a lot. It has a swap partition and it sure as hell uses it, the device it's plugged into only has 32mb of ram. Have you ever had one fail on you due to maxing out their r/w capability? In my experience, flash media usually dies because it's shitty. You can tell the difference when you barely use it and it still manages to shit the bed for no reason. I have some that just keep on going, though...

Works perfectly for me (Breaking Bad in Full HD, streaming over Samba on Ethernet). RE DTS, I have heard something like if your TV can't decode the audio, the RPi has to do it, and this can stretch it to the point audio/video gets choppy. I think because my TV is fairly new this isn't an issue for us though, but do look into your TV sets capabilities.
