It made a big story a while ago. Google setup a huge database with “audio signature” from various select industry players to automatically flag them in any uploaded videos.

It doesn’t work flawlessly though.. As expected..

Some idiots seems to have registered their remixes in that db as well, because once I got a claim that some company that’s not Nintendo, with no contact information at all or name or anything, owned the rights to the music from one of the starfox gameplay videos I made and it put ads on it … Ugh..

To be honest, screencapping someones game is illegal under copyright law. Whether the company cares or not is another problem.

It’s nice and simple with a two pronged approach.

1. Fines of infringing copyright (claiming copyright and removing causing damages, so unlimited fines, lets say at least $150,000 per incorrect link removed)

2. A 3 strike system – on the 3rd strike limit their takedowns to one per day for a period of one year. When copyright has been assigned to another company, all other brands connected to them will also come under the same ban.

I’ve actually read on some second life blogs about that back firing. user dispute complaints on youtube actually run like a proper forum so there are living mods handling the situation, if you are simply making a report or a claim out of reprisal is an express lane to getting your channel banned.
