I live here in Taiwan and I like the triad theory as a jumping off point, but it's not that simple. The real problem here is we have super fast connections here in Taiwan compared to most of the world. Most of the locals I know don't run virus programs or practice safe computing. Even in the fleet of 10 boxes I have moderate control over the only ones clean are the few I maintain, and use an English OS. I harangue my wife and employees to update the virus defs and not click on attachments, but I let my guard down for a few weeks... and boom another infestation that takes hours to sort out. I sadly have to agree that maybe the Taiwanese and Chinese have more than their share of botnets. My guess is that these botnets are created by the chinese communists to use in cyberwarfare against Taiwan and others. The theory they could be leasing them to RIAA contractors and sympathisers is a very good possibility. These botnets may thus be run by the Triads, but I doubt they are actually trying to protect their pirate DVD sales. I don't go out looking for them, but I never saw many fake DVD's in my decade in Taiwan, so I doubt these were a big profit center (but I could be wrong). If there is any industry it would NEED access to Demonoid to get high quality source files with which they would hardcode the chinese subtitles or dubs to. Yet Thailand and Indonesia and Vietnam are overflowing with fake DVD's...because they have poor internet connectivity.

So sadly, yes it has to be a Chinese (whatever flavour you want of them) thing, as no one seems to be blocking/complaining about the Japanese or the Koreans who have 100MB connections instead of Taiwan's average 8MB connections. I guess I have to agree that the Chinese/Taiwanese folk here are not the best computer users, sorry.

But all that said I miss Demonoid and hope that they can find some workaround for this. I've been a pirating scoundrel since Napster beta 4. I imagine my usage nears a terabyte every few months. I've seen so many great sites disappear, but this is hard to take just being banned like this. I haven't heard of eztv, or any other popular site banning us. With the loss of mininova, TPB seemingly less effective than it once was, Demonoid has a depth for rare stuff that is pretty hard to replicate. Folks above are dissing it but it is one of the best. I've been a demonoid member since around 2005, all of those years here in Taiwan, and I was overjoyed when they came back online after the year shutdown... and they still had my login and ratio intact! Because of this I am certain they are working on some ways to get legit users a way to access them. But I'm sad to say it'll be a lot harder to get Chinese people to maintain their computers. I mean c'mon....they put poison in their own peoples milk and toothpaste, and lead in their kid's toys to make a few bucks.SPOP

Since Demonoid bans entire countries, often without any justification or explanation (like with Germany), I think that if you're from one of those arbitrarily blocked countries, you're absolutely right to reciprocate their contempt with contempt for them. Blocking whole countries is as elitist as it gets, and they richly deserve the bad comments from there they earned this way.

What is with all of the Demonoid hate, exactly? I get everything that I want from Demonoid at decent speeds. I occasionally find malware in an upload, but nothing like you'd find on TPB. The community successfully identifies most malware and has it removed. Hint: WinRAR and Windows cracks are favorite malware delivery systems.

I have been a member of many exclusive private trackers and they were extremely overrated for the most part. Some of them were fairly close to scams, selling upload credit and banning many perfectly decent users for not being able to seed. Enforcing a ratio of one sounds reasonable, until you realize that over half of users have high speed seedboxes.

Even the legitimate private trackers are unnecessarily elitist when it come to client software and upload privileges. Honestly, there have only been a few clients that ever really needed to be banned. Banning every client except uTorrent and Azureus is just stupid, especially considering how many modded Azureus clients there were. The only three bad clients still around are BitComet (old versions), BitLord (all versions), and BitThief. There was never anything wrong with BitTyrant, but there would have been no reason to use it on a private tracker.

Private trackers are not any safer from government/corporate snoops either. As a matter of fact, their higher position in the warez chain makes them more attractive. If you think you can keep infiltrators out, you're an idiot. The typically small number of uploaders are easily targeted. Even your ultra-secret trackers that you think no one knows about are well known to government agencies. I won't mention any names here out of courtesy, but you know who you are.

This is not the hateful rant of a "n00b" against private trackers. I was sharing warez long before BitTorrent became the next big thing. I have never failed to seed any clean torrent to a ratio of five or greater no matter how long it took. I have never used unfair or subpar clients. Essentially, I am the ideal BitTorrent user and I hate elitist private trackers.
