In australia, to mention one example, the local news network owns exclusive licensing rights, apparently for perpetuity.

Hence Netflix won’t be allowed to sell their service as far as 90% of their portfolio is concerned. That they have a deal with the US rightsholder is irrelevant.

And that, boys and girls, is why 200,000 australian citizens who use a VPN to obtain a paid-for netflix subscription are considered illegal pirates.

I guess the collected money would go to Hollywood and that money would go there in case they released local series (local collecting right societies are a true mafia). Anyway -this happened two years ago and the govt. was another reason-, Netflix found it was unprofitable for them to come here and decided not to. Still, people here paid for the service as well as a VPN to access Netflix in US… to find the company is banning VPN users.

Talk about piracy.

Why would they have to ‘pay the local collecting right societies’ if they are based in America and are just extending their service to X country.
They should be paying Hollywood/whoever DIRECTLY if they are based in America.

Not poor, but a little afraid to use some payment options. I guess you could call those people paranoid if you want, but then again people who knew what Snowden leaked before he actually leaked it might have been thought of as paranoid during that time period as well.
