I wouldn't say this is overkill at all on most modern machines. ^///^ I would just say it is just overkill if you are not used to VM's and/or are using something like large like Ubuntu/Mint as the guest.

For instance, you could quite easily take something like qemu, install puppy linux, install a socks proxy and vpn client on it. Then, bundle it together with a portable version of utorrent.

Not quite as easy, but even better in use with this concept would be to build, within qemu, an openbsd minimal install with openvpn and dante. Taking into account that the minimal install openbsd is 7mb, Dante is about 1mb and openvpn is less than 500k coupled with the fact that the virtual hardware wouldn't need to be anything special at all, you could probably end up with increased performance over vuze with the added bonus of being able to direct most anything over it. (By that, I mean local machine performance, since a near idled openbsd machine takes next to no processing power and the added load of the vpn connection will be felt regardless which route you take..

That being said, this is more than anything, speculation. ^^;; I have not made mentioned set up, though I do have a sock proxy/vpn vm built on debian 5 running on an esxi5 server in my house. (on my dev network.) It functions splendidly. <3
---

I think I will try the setup I mentioned. :) It could be fun and also could make for a performance boost over my current torrenting vm. lol If it works well, I might put it up some place for people. :p

A word of CAUTION. Time of 2 secs (or even 1 sec!) between VPN drop and cutting the connection is way too long. You may have exposed yourself. As this prog does not go shorter than 1 sec it is not really safe to use.
A more preferable (and safer!!) solution can be found at http://code.vn720.com/2010/11/28/monitoring-vpn-connection/

Just a quick note to say how I keep anonymous. May be a bit overkill, but it works for me. Any comments welcome:

1)Install Lubuntu (13.04) on Virtualbox running in Windows 7.

2)Through Lubuntu, connect to Private Internet Access VPN with their Ubuntu install script.

3) Make my eth0 connection connect to VPN automatically through the Network Manager on the LXDE taskbar.

4) Use Deluge (and/or qBittorrent) and set them to only operate through the VPN interface, tun0

So far have had no problems with this setup. Lubuntu has low overhead and works well on a moderate Win7 box running VirtualBox. Since my clients are set to go through the tun0 (VPN) interface only, there is no risk of connection to the eth0 (ethernet) interface that I am aware of.
