I agree with the general consensus here. If I buy a radio for example, that can only pick up even numbered frequencies, there shouldn't be an issue with me tweaking it to play the odd channels too - unless of course the odd channels are premium & require an extra fee.

And that's exactly why Sony is suing. Most people who see this will think "Hey, I can get free games from this" and will stop paying for the games. Its not so much that we're hacking the PS3 in order to get it to run Firefox instead of their own browser... its that we're cracking their system to play free games.

@Ubermonk (# 8) the recent DMCA exception had limited scope (as do all exceptions). Don't quote me, but I believe A.) it only applies to smart phones, and B.) it only applies to installing legally obtained third party software that is not available by the provider (in this case, Apple). The exception does NOT cover jailbreaking your iphone (or if it covers PS3s) to run pirated games/apps.

IMHO though, I'd point out that they did it wrong. They shouldn't have chosen such a public avenue to stop Geohotz from spreading the news. By going public like this, now EVERYONE knows about it. Now everyone is going to scour the net looking for a mirror of Geohotz's site so they can get free games....

Any company that cites the "DMCA" as the grounds for the complaint is automatically engaging in Class A bullshit as far as I am concerend.

How long are we as free minded people going to sit back and suffer one injustice after another from The United States of Hypocrisy?

I agree with you all the way bro. If I want to alter my stuff to satisfy myself then I have that right to do so. As long as I am not doing anything illegal with it then there shouldn't be a problem ;) That would be like AMD and Intel suing people because they overclocked there cpu's.

Hey, it's simple. It is our hardware, we bought it. It does not belong to sony, if i want to make it run on linux or make a giant robot out of it, that is my business. You want to buy a car that is only allowed to drive in your state? Or a radio that only plays music from sony bmg? No, than you simply find a way to change the frequency and find a different station. Well that is "hacking" and you should be fined thousands of dollars for posting a way to hobby around with your hardware... Idiots.
