Honestly, I think music sales are declining for several reasons:
1. Spotify, Grooveshark, YouTube, Pandora. These services allow you to stream and play music for free. Honestly, download audacity and you can download the music being played through your speakers at the same quality anyway, so free music for life? Also, the industry, as others have said, are just giving it away with these services, offering no real penalty apart from a few pesky ads every now and then...

2. Technology. I agree that technology is making it a lot easier for independent artists to distribute music at studio-quality for a hell of a lot less. Often, with these sorts of things, the artists are all for "Free music distribution and anti-corporate greed" and so the music produced is distributed for free. Of course, this is not always true.

3. Small, but still contributing - Bad advertising? I mean seriously, the amount of terrible advertising to actually promote all these songs that come out is ridiculous. I mean yes, they have "top ten" re-plays and SOME adverts on television...But the ratio of songs made to songs known? Who KNOWS?!

4. Television. I wanted to separate this because it is a slightly different service to spotify, etc... Basically, let's be honest, the only music people listen to is the top 40 (Younger generation's and all that with their damn fads) and what better place than at home on the free music channels that they don't have to pay for and that play these top 40 songs on multiple channels 24/7? FOR FREE.

It seems to me that most of the fall in sales are due to poor choices made by the music industry itself rather than people's choice to buy music or illegally download it. To put it bluntly; we don't need to pay for it when it's given to us for free.

Look at GTAIV

shit was pirated DAYS before retail, hundreds of thousaands-> millions active seeders worldwide, and it still made apparently a billion dollars.

I think the number is inflated to further drive up sales (give people impresssions that its SOOO good they need it).

[…] http://torrentfreak.com/massive-musi...-sales-130919/ I doubt any of this has anything to do with actual sale numbers. Or even fake ones, they simply want to control the internet as a distribution platform. There are many venues today for artists to reach their fans, eliminating the "big" labels and I really doubt these bottom feeders would like something of that sorts to evolve. It's pretty much the same deal as the confrontation between the retailers and various digital distributors. Retail is dead, but they still don't know it. __________________ ... what?
The thing is people are no longer forced to buy a whole album for 1 song that they liked on the radio. This in my eyes is progress.

There is also the fact that only the Wealthiest of Artists make a significant proportion of they're income from these sales. Most Musicians who are not part of the 1% make most of their money from performing, which has not been hurt by piracy.

So remember, when you pirate. You are only hurting Wealthy D-Bags (some may be nice people but they are the minority) and even Wealthier Industry Executives(Evil Incarnate).

The problem is this: There aren't any modern-day equivalents of artists like Pink Floyd or The Beatles.

Everything sounds like it came out of the same Girl Scout cookie factory -- country music isn't country, it's just Pop with an occasional twang thrown in. Rap? Don't make me laugh!

The radio of today plays shit that all sounds the same.

If there is anything out there which has the talent and craft of Pink Floyd or The Beatles, then they are cleverly hidden.
