This slang description of the process perpetuates the myth that TPB hosts content, when it has never done so. A truer description is almost as short:
“seed a release and post its magnet link on The Pirate Bay.”

This is probably not the ONLY case of this even now.. for YEARS, scene people used government and private servers for hosting data– for which they were not compensating the owners for at the owners’ expense too. Many educational institutions were unknowingly hosts as well.. Lots of the geeks got their educational insitution’s money’s worth in the 90s :-)

What is amazing is that the hackers were able to mask the ip redirects for so long.. because if it was coming from an ISP– that’s the easiest kind to shut down had authorities known where it was coming from. Though today, because of the way systems are more secure.. it’s not a simple task of finding a system weakness (aka backdoor) and loading up an FTP server.. this crosses the line of computer trespass and theft of services laws on the books these days, including a plethora of anti-hacking/anti piracy laws.

Even more amazing is the business model for piracy is secure.. The Pirate Bay prooved that.. advertisers will pay to support a site that gets many users visiting web pages… which can link to p2p file sharing.. Meanwhile the anti-piracy forces try to attack that business model.. not knowing they’re kililng off a possible path to evolution of their own business model in exchange.. oh well.. fools and their money…

so whom dobbed them in? someone that was excluded from the elite group cos they didnt share

how stupid though running a content server in their place of work
its different if they hacked a server and had files hidden
like old days of FTP folders and irc informing people what the ip is and connect to it.
