I guess 1000 files out of a billion is not representative for the content in torrents. The result only depends on your search words. The above mentioned researchers did not tell how they got the 1000 files. Further more, 11 percent is 11 percent and not 0.3. Same with being guilty for something or not, innocent until proven otherwise. So... nice story Anon, guess you are a M$ or Mac fan / user.
For the mobile traffic shaping, there are easy ways around that (use other ports and encryption).
For Finnish Elisa that has to block the Piratebay, their mobile 3G P2P download speed is on good moments about 6MB/s what makes it very suitable for skype :D , they also made calling to other Elisa numbers free of charge. So there is another way..

Obvious troll is obvious. And troll is obviously troll.

And no, actually bittorrent was developed as a way to transfer large files while eliminating bottlenecks. In short the primary purpose for it's development was in open-source distribution.

You might as well claim that FTP was invented because of filesharing.

Well done, Asshat.

I remember specifically asking tech support about their traffic shaping policy. They were very clear that they did not block or throttle skype outright.

And although a marketing director did raise the issue of allowing VoIP in their networks or not he was publicly lynched in the papers and as far as i can tell Telenor dropped the idea quickly. Given that they are profiling themselves as a mobile broadband-carrier first and foremost this was probably a wise decision.

Traffic management is one thing. Traffic shaping another. I have no issues about traffic priorization when the reasons are clear and transparent.

But i do take offense when a carrier promises a certain bandwidth but neglects to tell me how they manage that traffic, giving me a fifth of those speeds for anything but plain http.

Traffic shaping is another can of worms entirely and very reprehensible.

Yes, well, the bittorrent protocol is actually at the heart of any cloud service as well. So if you are using any such service as a backup option then you are shit out of luck on a mobile with a carrier blocking p2p.

Which is a bad thing as that means you don't have a fast, reliable and cheap way to back up your data.

And then there's the entire skype problem. Most carriers should realize that they would earn more from providing a reputably reliant broadband service than their phone sector would satisfy. The margins are notably higher.

And customer satisfaction speaks for itself. That's why we see a lot of flak hitting Swedish telcos which admit they are not including VoIP in there 3G/4G solutions.
