As mentioned, a 3-copy check to extract and generate a clean ebook would be a matter of moments work, and automated.

Further, the DRM itself completely fails to recognise 3rd party theft. It assumes that no-one, ever, takes files from other peoples devices without their consent. That’s right, no-one has ever grabbed the mp3′s and pdf’s off a laptop that’s been dropped in for repair.

Idiocy. Between being a moments work to crack and failing to appreciate that the “pirate” isn’t always the person who purchased something, it’s a complete brain-fart on behalf of the organisation responsible. And that totally ignores the issue of ruining the written word.

I buy physical books still (I know, how old fashioned of me), and I get pretty disappointed when I find I’ve picked up a copy that has a typeset or printing error. At best I go back and get a replacement, at worst I let it go (because I have no other choice). However if I discover my ebook has such an “error” in it the first thing I’ll be doing is “fixing” it.
