Groups in alt.binaries.* can each contain over 100,000,000 posts. Storing just the titles alone requires TBs of storage, and quite a bit of horsepower to process. There are things you can do to reduce storage requirements, but its still a lot of data.

I think the real threat to the industry is the free music/artist movement. And movies seem to be heading in this direction too. Anyone seen ‘Star Wreck: ITP’?

Along with the free unrestricted distribution of bit-torrent, this truely poses a great threat to their business model.
