Could someone point me to information on how to protect yourself when downloading torrents, in Canada specifically? I was under the impression that torrent downloads couldn’t be prosecuted in Canada because of the way our copyright law is currently written. Please excuse my ignorance. Aiming to become educated.

For one thing, to understand why only in the province of Quebec. That could be a measure to send a message especially to federal NPD politiciens from Quebec, to not oppose the upcomming anti-piracy C-32 law.

Also, p2p is legal by itself. Any file name by itself is legal as no one holds a copyright on file names. It is the content that my have a copyright. So my assumption is that infringment start when you can verify if the content, once uncompressed, contains copyrighted materials. At that point, if you delete the file, has a violation been committed? Wonder if that would work in court in favor of the defendent.

Still in the same idea, violation would be proven only when the file would have been shared again, over a minimum period of time. Leaving enough time to validate the content copyright and delete it afterward. That would invalidate lots of lawsuit.
