The oversight is supposed to be congress and the executive branch both of whom (they could be lying) claim they weren’t aware of the extent of the activities. not only that the powers have been abused already with NSA agents having used the tools at their disposal to vet dates, spy of significant others, etc… Additionally the NSA has reported to congress that internal audits have shown that they collected information they should not have.
Encrypted VPNs are the best solution to ensure online safety and accessibility. You can deal NSA to a great extent if setup VPN on your systems and devices as the VPN encrypts your data through secure tunneling.

I don't think OpenVPN has been cracked. In any case, Id encrypt my traffic, at the very least it will stop my ISP snooping and protect me when I am on public wifi networks. I have been using EzyVPN for about 5 months and it works pretty well on my Mac and iPad.

Tor is the last one I would trust. For all you know the government is acting as your proxy and you would have no idea that they formulated your false security key and are monitoring everything.

You maybe right but the NSA wasn’t a kitchen-note-on-the-fridge term at the time and may have blown over the interest of most – plus, reminder that in WWII, we allowed the Germans disinformation over radio (supposed ‘coded’ for consumption of the listeners, the Germans) to think that ‘Normandy’ was a decoy invasion point when in fact it was the main invasion D-Day point – but the Germans thought we were feeding them disinformation and concentrated their men and equipment many miles north in France. The NSA could be (likely) feeding us disinformation.

Hogspace, so perceptive and true what you say. I’m thinking that ‘slow communications’ may be vogue again – with some old-fashioned ‘coded’ style alphabet – mathematically archaic but enough to throw the 2013 geeks for a loop – you know – “old fashion” is something they’re not trained nor acclimated to analyze. We’ll beat them for a while.
