The real reasons that the US is more fucked than most western nations is twofold; First of all because of their pre-vetted two-party system. Every incumbent political party loves using the “lost vote” argument to ensure dubious voters keep voting for them. In the US the dems and reps have been able to make that more or less true.

All you can really do about that is to keep voting according to yuor conscience and accept that your vote today might be almost lost but the fact that you did vote the way you did might mean your children can throw that vote similarly and make it count.

“To sum it up, most Americans are retarded, easily manipulated, warlike, scared, highly materialistic, disorganized, selfish and fat people as a result of this system where corporations are in power. America is a prison-like system where your thinking and acting is limited to what thecorporations want and force you to think and do. America is not free, at all. And it’s only becoming worse.”

Very similar to Europe then.

The second, and main reason why the US is currently in a worse state would be because most americans today still believe they’re living in the US of 1950. And that prevents them from recognizing the reality which more europeans take for granted – that all politicians are essentially crooks and that it’s not exactly unpatriotic to doubt your own political party.

And the reason is, of course, that US politicians discovered, over the course of the cold war, that the easiest way to get elected and remain incumbent is to be the one both frightening the citizenry and the one offering the quick safety solution. Much like a bible-thumping brimstone prophet leading his congregation of frightened sheep around by their noses.

The fact that GWB managed to be elected and re-elected while carrying such baggage as Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowicz in addition to his own shortcomings speaks wonders about the efficacy of fear as a political tool.

Not, of course, that western europe is much better. Apparently any nation which has had more than one generation between it’s current voters and the latest monster-in-office keeps forgetting just why it’s so important to apply critical thought especially against one’s own government.

Twenty years ago the journalist taking a picture of a starving naked child running down the street in some south asian hellhole or on fire in some african pit would win the pulitzer for informing the world about the horrors perpetuated elsewhere.

Today that same journalist gets jail time for distributing child pornography. For the same picture.

A few days ago two chiefs in the swedish police decided to protest the EU’s supreme court’s decision to declare the data retention directive illegal by saying that, among other things, without that directive they wouldn’t be able to track down and arrest a pedophile.

Today even hearing anyone use “think of the children” immediately makes me realize we have some immoral asshole trying to grind his political axe by pretending anyone objecting to his insane ideas is a pedophile sympathizer.

Dont ever doubt who actually rules murika.
