Let's not confuse a 3d printer with a replicator.

Not to mention, how many of these printed items aren't just decorative features or ultra simple tools( a comb) or aren't inferior to the real deal? Who wants to print an razor blade handle or a pen ink holder?

It would probaly dent Ikea profits and plastic product makers but it's not like it will make sense to use 3d printed plumbing instead of buying PVC pipes at home depot.

Now, a reliable, affordable, easy to use 3d metal work printer and circuit board maker would a serious game changer.

I think he's assuming the public will print out these items at home when 3D printers become a household fixtures.

Sorta like how some people repair thier own electronics instead of RMA'ing everything....

Can you 3d print rubber?

They are finally seeing the potential. Now we need to make a device that can select different materials so we can buy the materials in bulk, then simply 3d print our own media players, computers, coffee tables, and everything else. We cound save the designs and email our houses to anywhere and have a bunch of machines duplicate things as they were in a week, not in months. Talk about a neat way to move. The problem comes when you see headlines in the news about some sex toy company trying to sue some non millionaire who printed a dildo that "resembles" the company's products just so they can grab an easy $120,000 USD profit. Oi, when will the madness end?

Reading this, all I could think of was WAY back when I first saw a Mimeograph printer in action. It printed a whopping 60 pages a second, was as big and expensive as a stove, used blue/purple ink that smelled of peanut oil. An amazing thing. By that idea everyone here is talking about books. IE--No one prints books at home, we download them and read them on our portable devices.

I think that 3Dp has untold potential that has yet to be realized (artist, and craftsmen). I do not think 3Dp with (its current) limitations will ever replace mass-production for everyday objects. That being said I then think of my local photo center who PRINTS photos instead of developing them..........

"While I’m not stealing anything, I’m also not buying anything either, which directly impacts the manufacturers of the plugs and iPhone cases, and everyone in between them and the store I might have brought them from. Hollywood doesn’t have to worry about this conundrum because no one ever customizes a movie to suit their needs."

Remix culture says "hi!"

(Yeah I know it's not a perfect comparison, but still.)

Hi, I liked the article as well. I'd just like to add a small, but possibly vital point. You mention "one vital issue of manufacturing which Hollywood doesn’t have to deal with" is that "no one ever customizes a movie to suit their needs". In fact, plenty of people do this even with our current copyright regime. See, for example, the Star Wars fan edits (for example, Episode 1 edited to remove Jar Jar Binks), or "The Thief and the Cobbler" (where the original film was butchered by the Hollywood machine and fans tried to make an unofficial restoration). Another example of such "customization" is translation (i.e. movie subtitles for films). When no translation exists of a beloved film, fans will make their own. But websites that offer such fan-made subtitles are illegal, and some have been sued. It is possible that fan-made modifications to 3D-printer designs will suffer the same fate.

For music, it's even more of an issue. Sites that offer guitar tabs for popular songs (so people can play the songs at home on their own instruments, maybe even modify them like used to happen with folk music) have been under legal attack. What copyright has done is limited the way in which art used to disseminate (with many different versions of songs, with each artist playing it in their own way). If folk art is dead, copyright is the reason.

So it's quite possible that self-modification of physical objects will be put under attack, and will become less common, just like self-modification of music did.
