Too true.

There’s another thing to come out of western “morality clash” as well. Way back when Japan sent ambassadors to the west in order to find out what the social gaffe’s were the ambassadors came back with the surprising (well, for the japanese) revelation that apparently anything erotic was censored as a matter of good taste.

What’s highly erotic to the 18th-century japanese? Pubic hair and large boobs. Hence you could get around the pixellation by ensuring the nudity depicted had none of the above.

And that’s why so damn much of the non-pixellated nude imagery in japan tends to look as if the depictions are of prepubertal children. Go figure.

You need to come into the 21st century then….. it meshes VERY well with their deeply held worldview on this subject that is not much different from Americans viewpoint: That content is overpriced, over DRM’d, and just not worth the money.

Plus, they have cable TV and satellite TV memberships in Japan too…. people don’t like having to ‘buy the Blu-Ray to get uncensored!’

I watch a lot of anime in 720p, since everything above that is upscaled and unnecessary. (I live in the UK, btw.)

But the pricing for anime is so fucking insane, esp. at one Blu-ray volume a month.

Take Hyouka for instance. (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?q=Hyouka&term.media=Blu-ray&page=1)

$68.87 per volume, with 11 volumes total. That’s $757.57 for one 22 episode series + one OVA. And that’s not including shipping cost, highly extortionate customs charges and having to fork out money for a region free Blu-ray player.

And the main reason I would never buy anime licensed in the west is because…

1. They cram more episodes onto one disc, which means it’s bitstarved and therefore lower quality.
2. Westerners (mainly the British) have a hard-on for censorship. (We had to censor this lolis nipples ’cause THE CHILDREN and stuff.)*
3. Dubbed (I prefer to hear the original Japanese voice actors, esp. the lovely Hanazawa Kana, rather than some American ones.)

A VPN would probably be quite a bottleneck for them. The bandwith in Japan is way higher than in most other countries and a VPN would slow that down quite a bit. For me here a VPN makes no difference – Mediacam still advertises 20 Mbit as *cough* high speed *cough* and ATT advertises their fiber optics as the fastest internet you can get. 45 Mbit *lol*. And the rest of the world laughs ;)
