There is nothing wrong with an ad-hominem when the character of the recipient is in question.

Usually, for example, someone can be stupid in one area, so calling them stupid in general would be an adhominem attack that has no bearing on the discussion.

However, if someone is ignorant in a very large amount of areas, and willfully so in contrary of evidence, it is perfectly okay to resort to a personal attack, as it IS their person that is the problem.
