Just imagining if Americans had sites "blocked" like that... I don't know how the UK put up with it.

It is an interesting statement that DHT and P2P indexing websites "all have control over which torrent files they index" -- how could they, without programming in some keyword-banning mechanism, which would need to filter results (thus slowing it to a halt), take in keywords from bogus requests (who decides what gets filtered and why?), as well as completely undermining their core principle of open-sharing and finding free content, regardless of what it may be. Blacklisting websites that search through peer-to-peer results hinders this technology, making it seem like the technology itself is "evil". Much like tape cassettes were once "evil", too. Nonsense. And if it weren't for P2P, many rare and top artists today would be unheard of, with less consumers attending their venues -- corporate record labels are just sad they can't take the credit for it anymore.

The BPI evidently think none of us remember the Sony rootkits, etc.

The industry set a precedent - If you want to avoid malware, avoid purchasing music from the major labels as they can't be trusted!

Good advice that people should heed. I don't use cracks and I always run keygens in a sandbox / virtual machine. If something is particularly suspicious, I'll either delete it outright or test it on an old, air gapped PC configured specifically for the job. I try to save up and buy any apps I find useful and well made since the dev deserves it, provided the price isn't insane. It just doesn't make sense to pay $1000's of dollars for an app I may only use once in a while for example.

As to the article, profit is the sole motivation and thus the only thing that matters, right? So with all those site blocked, the music and movie industry should now be seeing a massive increase in profitability. I'd love to see the numbers, to show the public that their taxes, their law enforcement and the time of their courts haven't been completely wasted in vain. Otherwise the inevitable damage to civil liberties due to this undertaking will have all been for nothing.

Been trying out the FrootVPN for the last hour or so and seems to work great. Works great with µTorrent too. The servers are out of Sweden and are fast. Using the VPN with the OpenVPN package. At free, the price is right.

Update: They use servers in other EU countries too. So far I've connected through Sweden and France. I'm in the U.S. and the speeds while connected through the VPN for torrenting, streaming movies and surfing the world wild webz are extremely impressive.

I would suggest that our UK mates give it a try for circumventing these stupid IP blocks.

"As for back doors and other nasty things contained in software. I'm sure
these are just fictional threats since all key gens come up as a virus
or trojan when scanned with AVG (this software is the equivalent of life
insurance - it pays to scare people)."

No, they are there to protect users like you from your own ignorance.

The reason they are flagged is because they are considered infringing programs and rather then study to see which ones are clean or infected, they mark all cracks and keygens as malware on the sole stance that it infringes copyrights.

But saying that all of them are harmless...

Learn a bit of C++, study a bit of information securities and learn port, packet, frames and protocols. Use a bit of wireshark to see what these cracks and some keygens send out to a data collector server. I bet your jaw would drop.

Cracks - 95% of the time it will infect you or morph your app you cracked into a backdoor
Keygens - 60% of the time the app its self is harmless, but the hosting provider would infect the app.

Apps that can be activated with just a serial are best, as most serials can be found in a txt file or on pastebin, use a keygen in a sandbox, but even that's not a garuntee saftey.

Not trying to be an asshole, but just have to point out how so wrong you are...

- Experienced the birth of the internet, it was a great time.
- A+ & Networking+ certs

PS:
Here's some advice, may want to check those free apps on your phone.
Or can you give me reason why a free flashlight app would need privileges such as phone identity, SMS, email, Call history, GPS, microphone, camera, SIM, and unrestricted network access)

Let me guess, it's a fancy flashlight app that can also change your screen to different colors? lol
